Little did anyone know, that the man who worked at a garment factory would become one of the biggest names in Tamil cinema. Born to a well-known actor Sivakumar, he was formally introduced in the film world with director Vasanth’s film Nerrukku Ner, alongside Vijay. After a string of flops and starring in unrecognizable roles, the actor starred in director Siddique’s Friends, which turned out to be a hit!

The star we are talking about is, Suriya. We watched him prove his acting prowess with the film Nandha, and Mouna Pesiyadhe. But, seeing him play the role of a smart and fierce cop in Kaakha Kaakha is when we noticed him! Let’s take a look at few films that made Suriya a bankable star:
Kaakha Kaakha (2003)
Director – Gautham Menon

Arguably the first film to win him overwhelming response from the critics and audience alike, Kaakha Kaakha brought Suriya to the commercial film arena. His toned physique and good looks won him fans! His reel-life chemistry with Jyothika (now real-life wife), was also one of the highlights of this film.
Pithamagan (2003)
Director – Bala

Although it was a multi-starrer and featured a terrific performer like Vikram, Suriya had a meaty role in the film. His comic antics and expressive eyes made him shine throughout this film. If you plan on watching this movie, we suggest you keep a box of tissues ready. *Your eyes will tear up*
Vaaranam Aayiram (2008)
Director – Gautham Menon

With soul-stirring songs and wonderful characterization, Vaaranam Aayiram made a place in our hearts moments after its release. There was another key factor that made this movie a super-hit. And that was the charming presence of Suriya. Playing the role of a lover boy, an ailing man, a drug addict and an army office, Suriya delivered an engaging performance.
Ayan (2009)
Director: K. V. Anand

Want to see Suriya play a funny-yet-engaging performance? Then Ayan is your pick! Portraying the role of a smuggler, Suriya gave a commendable performance with K. V. Anand’s Ayan.
Singam (1 and 2) (2010, 2013)
Director: Hari

Once again Suriya donned the role of a police officer in director Hari’s Singam Series. A full ‘masala’ entertainer, this film’s catchy punch lines and stomach-punching action sequences was well-received by the audience. Couldn’t get enough of the Singam series? Then, here’s the good news! Director Hari and Suriya will soon begin working on Singam 3. The film will star Anushka and Shruthi Haasan in lead roles.
Be it a performance-oriented role or a commercial entertainer, Suriya delivers his roles with ease. He also has a good fan base in Malayalam and Telugu cinema, which has gained him a strong fan base in South Indian cinema. He may be having a bad patch at the box-office currently, but we’re pretty confident that he’ll be back to form soon. His upcoming releases are Vikram Kumar’s 24, and Trivikram‘s untitled Telugu-Tamil bilingual. On this note, let’s wish the actor a very happy birthday!
