Romance is generally defined in real life by hearts, balloons and red roses. Movies also typically show love stories with candle-lit dinners, dream sequences in Europe and diamond rings. Then, there are films that are much more than that; in which love is more passionate and even violent.

Today is the anniversary of one such film, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. The romantic-tragedy was inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and was set in violent times of Gujarat, India. The electrifying chemistry between the lead actors is the reason one can watch the movie multiple times.

As the film completes three years, let's have a look at five movies with a different take on love:

Ria loves him so much that she resorts to tactics that scare Geeta and even threaten her safety and eventually tries to kill her, but fails. She is so madly in love that she actually goes mad when she realised she can't have Jai in her life.

Again a romantic thriller where two love birds choose to kill each other rather than living without each other. This is the story of Parma (Arjun Kapoor) and Zoya (Parineeti Chopra) who hail from different religions and political families. A slap turns them into lovers eventually but a love that defies the laws of communities and religion. They are pursued by their families who join forces in order to save their respect within their communities and political careers. The film is a tale of honor killing in which religion and pride are kept before two lives.

Another adaptation of a Shakespeare play. Omkara is inspired from Othello and hence the film deals with betrayals. Ishwar 'Langda' Tyaagi feels hurt after Omkara (Ajay Devgn) chooses Kesu (Vivek Oberoi) over him to be his successor. He builds misunderstandings between Omi and his wife, Dolly (Kareena Kapoor) by using his own wife. As a result Omi kills Dolly. And after realising his folly, Omi commits suicide while Langda Tyagi is killed by his wife. This is what they call Karma.
