Akshay Kumar has lately been a part of movies that are socially relevant and have an intent for the good of the society. Films like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Jolly LLB 2, or Oh My God! for that matter, have created a niche with an audience who look at Akshay Kumar movies as a good use of cinema. With a similar intention, his next movie Pad Man revolves around a man who left no stone unturned to help women with a problem that the world referred to as "none of his concern".
And while we all eagerly wait for the movie, here are five reasons why you cannot miss Padman:
1) Based on a Truly Inspiring Story
The movie revolves around the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social entrepreneur from Coimbatore. He invented a low-cost sanitary napkin-making machine that manufactures sanitary pads for less than one-third of what commercial pads cost. He is also credited with generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices regarding menstruation in the rural areas of the country. He never went to an IIT or IIM, but the students there use his example for case-studies.
2) Inspiration from Mrs. Funnybones
The plot of the movie is inspired by one of the chapters of Twinkle Khanna's book The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad i.e. The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land. If we may rephrase one of Khanna's quotes during the book launch, then it won't be wrong to say that people are watching many many bad films in large numbers, so watch this one because it's gonna be good!
3) The Real Struggle
Arunachalam Muruganantham was ostracized by his community and family when they came to know what he was working on. His wife left him, he was ridiculed by the village, but he never gave up. Now his machinery is set up in 23 out of the 29 states in the country and he plans to expand the production of his machines to 106 nations. Does it even make sense to miss this movie?
4) The Real Issue
Menstruation has always been one of the 'taboos' in this country. With age-old traditions of unhygienic practices and disallowing menstruating women from regular activities still prevail. No one talks about the subject on a large scale, especially in rural areas. While social media is not highly accessible there, a movie starring Akshay Kumar is sure to create awareness.
5) The Leading Ladies
While our leading ladies have more often than not have stepped in to speak up for women empowerment and equality, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor are playing the leads in this movie. The beautiful actresses have taken up roles that will not only inspire women, but will also educate them regarding their basic hygiene.
Need more reasons to watch the movie? We don't think so.
