Casting is a serious business in cinema. It can make or break a film. A sure-shot winning trend is to put together an ensemble cast. It not only acts like a crowd puller but also guarantees a substantial return on investment. Films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Sholay, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara are great examples of multi starrers that were successful at the box office. Obviously this approach isn’t always as effective (think Humshakals and more recently Dilwale).

An actor who is meant for a role will feel at ease when on camera and deliver a fine performance. So, getting the casting right is immensely important and forms the bedrock of a great film. Finding the right man or woman for the job takes time. Here are five times Bollywood faced some serious casting issues.
Karan Johar’s Shuddhi
Shuddhi has been in the news for its casting for a very long time now. Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were initially rumored to be the leads. Then there was word, it was Salman Khan, but finally, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt have been finalized. We also hear that the film may be put off.
Vikramaditya Motwane’s Bhavesh Joshi
Initially the film was set to star Imran Khan. But soon after there was a change in cast and Sidharth Malhotra was set to play the lead. However, last year Vikramaditya Motwane announced that the timing wasn’t right and the film has been scrapped, for now.

Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Milan Talkies
An Ekta Kapoor production, Milan Talkies faced very serious changes in cast. Initially Imran Khan and Priyanka Chopra were to play the lead pair, but after a fall out with the production house Imran walked out and was soon followed by Priyanka’s exit. Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor were approached and finalized, but they too dropped out and the film is said to be on-the-hunt for a cast since.
Shekhar Kapur’s Paani
Hrithik Roshan‘s dream of working with Shekhar Kapur almost became a reality. But when after delays and deluge, YRF was all set to produce Paani, we heard the news of Hrithik’s exit. Finally, Sushant Singh Rajput was cast as the lead.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani
Bajirao Mastani was marred by the casting troubles for close to twelve years. The RanveerDeepika starrer was initially going to star Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and later Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Several other stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif were also linked with the project.
