Red Sparrow comes out March 2nd and it's about a ballerina who is trained to use her body as a weapon. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, who has already shown herself to be adept with a bow and arrow. While Red Sparrow is going to be unlike any other movie you've ever seen, here we will get to see Lawrence finally become a force to be reckoned with, much like these legendary female action heroes.
Lorraine Broughton – Atomic Blonde
Atomic Blonde was Charlize Theron's second movie as a female action lead after Æon Flux and it was even better than anyone could have expected. Charlize Theron played an undercover agent in this movie, similar to Jennifer Lawrence who has to pretend to be someone else in Red Sparrow.
Evelyn Salt – Salt
Angelina Jolie is no stranger to action movies. Indeed, some of her most famous films are action films. Salt was the last action film and it had much of the same spy ongoings like Red Sparrow although Salt is on the CIA side instead of working with the Russians.
Ellen Ripley – Aliens
Who would not lose their minds when they encounter an alien species that seems determined to kill them? Sigourney Weaver, that's who. Ripley is one of the most well-remembered characters from the Aliens franchise and that's for a good reason – she's one of the most successful alien fighters for being good at using guns and making wise decisions.
Lara Croft – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
This was the movie that introduced many to Lara Croft who's not only one of the few female action heroes in movies but also one of the few female action heroes from video games. And though Angelina Jolie has been the face of this character since 2001, with the new reboot coming out this year, it will be Alicia Vikander.
Diana Prince – Wonder Woman
Gal Gadot was not only the perfect actress to be in the first female superhero movie in a long, long time, she was also DC's saving grace. Not only did she look awesome defeating villains, she had also filmed this while being pregnant.
The Bride – Kill Bill
No list of female action heroes can be complete without mentioning Uma Thurman's The Bride. Being a Quentin Tarantino film, it doesn't shy away from the blood and gore, which is usually not seen in action movies like these.
Selene – Underworld
Underworld was more fantasy-based than the other movies on the list, but it had enough action to match the rest. It showed us a world with a feud between vampires and werewolves and gave us Kate Beckinsale as a badass vampire warrior for five movies.
Alice – Resident Evil
Underworld and Resident Evil had a lot in common – having a female as the lead (in this case Milla Jovovich as Alice), heavy CGI, being hugely popular despite not being favored by the critics, and having the final movie of the franchises coming out in 2016. However, Alice is as memorable as Selene, and hopefully, Red Sparrow will be too.
