Cinema, no doubt, is an extension of our imagination and fantasies but sometimes filmmakers tend to take this creative liberty too far. Of the many absurd things that Bollywood has given us over the years, perhaps one of the most exaggerated ideas is the use of the same actor to play the role of both father and son or mother and daughter. Yes, we understand that children resemble their parents to a certain extent, but an exact copy, a doppelganger is pushing things a bit.
Here are some of the most famous movies where the sons played their own fathers.
Prabhas in Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)
This highest grossing Indian film saw Prabhas assuming the roles of both Amarendra and Mahendra Baahubali. Of course, Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati) is incredible but Prabhas is so nice, you have to see him twice.
Shah Rukh Khan in English Babu Desi Mem (1996)
A dream film for Shah Rukh Khan fans as they would find their favorite actor in almost every frame. Here, King Khan played the roles of an NRI Vikram Mayur, his twin brother Hari Mayur and father Gopal Mayur. Even Sonali Bendre’s beauty got sidelined due to an overdose of the Baadshah. The film did too eventually and we are not complaining.
Hrithik Roshan in Krrish (2006)
Arguably, the first superhero in Bollywood, Krrish did not just inherit his superpowers from daddy Rohit Mehra but his looks as well. Same face, same height and the same, extra thumb! #KSorryBye
Amitabh Bachchan in Sooryavansham (1999)
Everyone needs to thank Set Max on TV for bringing Thakur Bhanu Pratap Singh and his son Heera Singh, both played by Amitabh Bachchan, to our homes so regularly. Well, which Amitabh do you like more? The 60-year-old father or well, the 60-year-old son?
Rajnikanth in John Jani Janardhan (1984)
Even our one and only Thalaiva Rajinikanth was not spared. In this film, we saw him playing the character of a father and his two sons simultaneously. We always knew Rajini Sir is not an average human being but to play one’s own father and then a brother all in the same film is a bit too much.
Govinda in Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000)
In this rather forgettable film, Govinda plays not one, two, three but six roles – the lead character's grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, sister and of course, himself. Loud and over-the-top but then so was the entire movie. We know it was supposed to be funny but eventually, it was far from it.
Prabhas again in Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017)
Yes, the clock is ticking fast and we can’t wait for Baahubali to recreate magic yet again onscreen. This has to be the most recent example where the same actor will appear in dual roles, again. If sources are to be believed, you might also get a chance to see Prabhas playing triple roles in its sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion. We are kinda excited about this one though and we know you are too. Don’t forget to book your tickets in advance here.
This was our list. If you have other similar examples, let us know in the comments below.
