Edward Thomas Hardy, aka Tom Hardy, turns 39 today. Born and raised in London, the English actor has been active in the film industry since 15 years, when he made his debut in Ridley Scott's 2001 action film Black Hawk Down. After that he has only climbed the ladder, showing his prowess in all sorts of roles. He loves doing things he hasn't done before – it is this attitude which has gotten him such a variety of roles.
Some of his diverse roles include: betrayer and trapper from the 1800s in the 2015 film The Revenant; the fear-inducing Bane in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises; another film where he plays the villain is in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis; in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) he plays the dogged and rugged titular role; in Nolan's 2010 thriller Inception he plays the sharp-tongued forger Eames; he plays a CIA agent in the 2012 action/romance film This Means War. It's always exciting for us to see how he aces all these roles. Today, on his birthday, let's have a look at 7 interesting facts about Mr. Hardy.
When asked if he ever had sex with another man, he replied "Of course i have. I'm an actor, for f***'s sake." Just how frank is Tom?
His sense of humour isn't the only thing that is bent about him. The little finger on his right hand is permanently bent, due to a knife accident which severed a tendon in his finger. After three operations he was able to close his finger to make a fist, but it still cannot straighten. Guess you could call it a dog's tail.
Tom has been through some hard times. He battled alcohol and crack addiction in his early 20s. After entering rehabilitation, he has been sober since 2003.
Back in drama school, he was in the same class as Michael Fassbender, who Tom praised as the most talented in the school. His acting idol is Gary Oldman and Tom must be honoured to have worked with him four times so far – The Dark Knight Rises, Child 44, Lawless and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Hardy named his childhood dog Max because he was a fan of the film Mad Max (1979). How cool is it that he later went on to play the titular role in the 2015 'reboot' called Mad Max: Fury Road?
Every tattoo on him has a meaning behind it. He got his first one at 15 – a leprechaun, paying homage to his mother’s Irish ancestry. Years later he got a dragon for his now ex-wife Sarah Ward. No, she wasn't a dragon, but was born in the year of the dragon. He called it a 'mistake tattoo.' He also has his agent's name inked on his left arm. Tom said that if he would get him into Hollywood, he would get his name tattooed, so he did. That's what we could call a 'gratitude tattoo.'
For Thomas, there are two things that are great in his life: "One is my family and the other is my work, and I will protect them both to the death." Very virtuous, Tom. We wish you a happy birthday!
