What was the last Tom Cruise movie you liked? If you keep that in mind, it's been long enough that we haven't seen this 55-year-old actor in a good movie. His last two movies were Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and The Mummy. Unfortunately, both the movies weren't received very well. This month, he’s back with American Made, a biopic that portrays the life story of a pilot named Barry Seal.

It turns out that this movie is better than expected. Tom Cruise has managed to perform brilliantly showcasing his natural acting abilities. There are also many who think that this movie is a resurrection for Tom Cruise.

American Made directed by Doug Liman, the man who directed him in the underappreciated film Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Liman has succeeded in bringing out the talents of Cruise once again. Plus, despite taking a pretty serious topic, Liman has managed to pack American Made with a light-hearted style that is fun to follow.

The film opens with introducing Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) as a pilot for a major airline, TWA. Barry has a pretty good track record as a reliable pilot. He meets Monty Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) who asks him to become a CIA agent. Schafer offers him to become a spy pilot in charge of taking pictures of rebel locations in Central America. Barry decides to get out of his comfort zone in TWA and follow his adventurous heart.

As he is successful in performing his duties as a spy, Barry is also appointed as a courier. His work as a courier leads him to Colombian drug cartel frontmen, Jorge Ochoa and Pablo Escobar who later go on to create the Medellin cartel. He is then asked to send drugs to America. Not having much of a choice, Barry obeys their request with the lure of a high reward. For years Barry does illegal jobs until he becomes wealthy.

Barry poured out his money in forming his own troops to run both the CIA operations as well as work as drug couriers. He also transformed the quiet little town of Mena in Arkansas into a vibrant city.

This is where conflicts begin to emerge. Barry's investment in Mena invites police and FBI suspicions. His reputation also almost shakes the government of Ronald Reagan, President of the United States at that time. Finally, there is an investigation that leads to Barry's arrest. But instead of being imprisoned, Barry is asked to do a mission. The government sends him to capture drug lords none other than Jorge Ochoa and Pablo Escobar, his own partners.

Then, what is the eventual fate of Barry Seal? You’ll have to watch American Made to find out.

Instead of telling the story with a serious tone, Doug Liman chose to reveal the story of Barry Seal in a lively manner. You will also be amused by the light banter that appears throughout the film.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise plays the main character well. He appears natural and successfully represents the character of Barry Seal. His actions as an aircraft pilot also look quite convincing. Moreover, you are sure to be entertained by the chase scene between Barry’s team members and the government. Reportedly, a number of scenes of flying the plane were done alone by Tom Cruise. It’s no wonder as Cruise is one of celebrities with a pilot’s license. American Made is also the first time Tom Cruise is acting alongside Sarah Wright and they have a strong chemistry as a married couple.

The story is not too long-winded, making this movie a fun watch from the beginning to the end. American Made aired in the Indonesian theaters starting August 25, 2017.

American Made is set to release in India on September 29, 2017. Are you excited for the film as we are? Let us know in the comments below.
