Most people do not understand horror movie buffs like us fans. “What makes watching violence, slaughter, and paranormal activity fun?” they always ask. But for us, there’s nothing better. The suspense, anticipation, and terror are totally worth it. The gorier the film, the more fascinating it is. Horror movie lovers also happen to be the most unsatisfied fans of the lot. Because some horror movies just do not live up to the hype. For example, Paranormal Activity was only scary to those who thought it was real. Otherwise, it just did not make the cut for our top 10 list.

As BookMyShow is celebrating its 10th anniversary, we want to remember those movies of the last 10 years that actually gave us the shivers. If you think we have missed out on any, feel free to comment below. Take a look at our top 10 horror movies here:

Orphan (2009)

The twist in this psycho thriller was definitely not what we expected. Starring Vera Farmiga (from The Conjuring), the story unravels around a girl adopted by a family of four. While the parents and their youngest daughter warm up to the orphan girl immediately, the son finds it hard to adjust with his new sister. He might be on to something and his mother becomes weary about her adopted daughter too. What happens next will send shivers down your spine. Watch the trailer for the film here.

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

While this movie does not stand in the leagues of The Conjuring and The Exorcist, it is a must-watch for horror movie fans. This movie comes from director Sam Raimi, who is known for the Grudge series, the first Spider-Man series, and the Evil Dead trilogy. You encounter one of its scariest scenes in the first 15 minutes into the movie, when an old woman apprehends a loan officer in her car and gives her the scare of her lifetime. Hostel: Part III (2011)

Even if this movie does not terrify you, it will definitely leave you sick to the stomach. The Hostel series is about an elite organization that commits gruesome murders for the purpose of entertainment. If this is not enough to pique your interest, Hostel: Part III includes a game show of torture, which four men celebrating a bachelor party accidentally stumble upon. Suddenly, they become props for a game that does not end well for anyone. Watch the trailer of the film to know more:

The Woman in Black (2012)

This was Daniel Radcliffe’s first film after the Harry Potter series ended. Many were surprised to see him pick horror as a genre, but the film surely changed their minds. An ultimate game of patience, you just can’t wait for this movie to be done with, as the suspense drives you crazy. It also shows Radcliffe in a new avatar, as a serious solicitor and father of a young boy, fairly different than what we were used to. See him in the film’s trailer here:

The Conjuring (2013)

This list is incomplete without the mention of the horror thriller, and its sequel that came out last year. The movies narrate the experiences of paranormal investigators (played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), as they help families get rid of the dark forces that trouble them. Special attention has been paid to costume and makeup in the films, as compared to other horror movies, which rely solely on lighting and sound for thrilling effects. The Babadook (2014)

One of the scariest horror films of recent years, this is a psychological horror that was shown at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it was well received. It is the story of a woman traumatized by the death of her husband, while her son has his own struggles with the dark forces within their house. One thing is for certain – this is not the movie you want to watch alone at night. Unless you want to be scared to death by the ba-ba-dook! Even the trailer of the film will give you chills. Watch it here:

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

The horror saga continues and gets better with each movie. The scariest chapter of the Insidious series, this one acts as a prequel to the haunting of the Lambert family. A psychic uses her gift to contact the dead, who have left a teenage girl disturbed. But these are some dark evil forces that will leave no stone unturned in spreading fear within the characters, as well as the audience. Watch the trailer of the film here:

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

This film that released last year is about a widowed mother who involves her young daughters in her business of scamming people through séances. But one session goes awry, and her youngest daughter comes into contact with dark spirits that threaten her life, as well as the family. While séances might no longer make appealing storylines to horror movies, this one certainly sends shivers down your spine. Catch a glimpse of the horror in the trailer here:

Don’t Breathe (2016)

What is scarier than paranormal activity and supernatural beings? Real humans with psychopathic tendencies! When three teenagers decide to rob a blind man with a treasure, they are in for a major surprise. He is not one to be crippled by blindness, outsmarting them in his own territory. One of the finest psychological thrillers of recent years, this movie must not be missed, simply for its unique plot, and unpredictable turn of events. Train to Busan (2016)

Zombie movies are mostly overrated, especially after The Walking Dead, which familiarized us with the dead in a way that they are no longer scary. All zombie movies have the same plot, but this action horror manages to stand out. The story is based in South Korea, where the zombie virus breaks out in a train going from the capital to Busan. Trapped inside, the travelers have no option to kill the dead before they kill them. Watch the trailer of the film here:

The next horror film that we are looking forward to is Stephen King’s It. Do you think it’ll live up to its hype?
