The first half of the year is over and what an eventful six months it has been for Bollywood. Neerja, Airlift, Kapoor & Sons, Ki & Ka, Housefull 3, and Udta Punjab were clear winners at the box-office while biggies like Fitoor, Jai Gangaajal, and Sarbjit didn't really live up to the hype. Besides movies, there were many other stories that made headlines. The most talked-about controversy in the last month was that of Udta Punjab, and the industry showed their unity by standing up to the Censor Board. A lot more happened in the month of June and if you missed out on any of the gossip, get a quick recap here.
Celebs attend the IIFA Awards
The last award ceremony of the year, IIFA, was recently held in Madrid, Spain. Salman Khan (reportedly to promote Sultan), Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar were a few of the celebrities who attended the function. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani was the winner of the night, as it bagged the most number of awards.
Udta Punjab rocks the box office
No one was sure if Udta Punjab would release on June 17th as the Censor Board asked for too many cuts, and the makers weren't willing to do so. Luckily, Anurag Kashyap and Ekta Kapoor managed to get permission from the High Court, and the film hit theaters on the 17th itself. While all the cast members were top notch, and Alia Bhatt, in particular, was fabulous. Udta Punjab was praised by the critics and the audience, too, loved the film.
Housefull franchise still works
Sajid Khan may not have helmed the third installment of the Housefull film series, but the movie still worked at the box-office. Starring Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri and Lisa Haydon, Housefull 3 opened to packed houses and became one of the highest grossers of the year so far.
Hollywood releases impress
This year, Hollywood beat Bollywood on more than one occasion. In June, two Hollywood releases fared better than the Hindi ones. The Conjuring 2 managed to earn more than Te3n and Do Lafzon Ki Kahani while Independence Day: Resurgence, which released alongside Raman Raghav 2.0 and 7 Hours To Go, was the first choice among moviegoers.
Tusshar Kapoor becomes a father
June was definitely a great month for the Kapoor family. After the success of their production, Udta Punjab, they had another reason to celebrate as Tusshar welcomed home his son – Laksshya. Not too many details about the child’s birth have been revealed but the family shared a picture of him with Jeetendra.
