War, Kabir Singh and URI: The Surgical Strike topped the Bollywood box office charts last year. While one was expected, the others were pleasant and controversial surprises. This year, we once again have a tough competition among some highly awaited films by Bollywood’s top directors. Some of your favorite actors and actresses will be seen on the big screen (probably more than once) and the battle for the top spot will get intense in 2020. It’s probably too soon to make predictions of the films that will emerge as the top three winners, so we have instead predicted the biggest Bollywood blockbusters for every month. Take a look at our predictions below and see if you agree with us.
January – Street Dancer 3
This month brings us three star-studded inspirational films – Chhapaak, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, and Panga. But if there’s anything that the box office has shown us is that the audience is always going to pick entertainment above all. This Varun Dhawan film not only rakes in the masala factor but it also looks like an audio-visual treat that will score big points with the audience.
February – Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan
Ayushmann Khurrana is Bollywood’s golden boy at the moment. He has been enjoying successful runs in the box office for some time now and his upcoming comedy which touches upon homonormativity in India can win big, especially with the younger audience. Other big competitors in this month will be Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship and Love Aaj Kal 2.
March – Sooryavanshi
It’s a month of sequels! Among the top releases – which include Baaghi 3 and Angrezi Medium – this Akshay Kumar and Rohit Shetty collaboration is a sure-shot winner. Not only are both the actor and director fan-favorites, but this movie also marks Shetty’s third in his cop universe, which has enjoyed tremendous success so far. Buzz is that both Singham and Simmba will make appearances.
April – ’83
Kabir Khan is one of Bollywood’s most successful directors and he’s back this year with the formula of success. By combining Bollywood with cricket, he has the opium of the Indian masses. This Ranveer Singh starrer will take us back to the Cricket World Cup of 1983 when India lifted the trophy for the first time. It will surely spike up the nostalgia factor and no Indian is likely to miss this.
May – Coolie No. 1
May has a line-up of some big releases. Akshay and Salman go head-to-head with their Eid releases Laxmmi Bomb and Radhe. Earlier in the month, Shakuntala Devi, Dil Bechara, and the remake of The Girl on the Train also release on the same day. But it’s the remake of the Bollywood classic by David Dhawan and starring Varun Dhawan that’s going to have people more excited than ever.
June – Thalaivi
With fewer releases like Indoo Ki Jawani, Khaali Peeli, and Mumbai Saga, June is likely to be a slow month for Bollywood before Thalaivi makes a grand entrance towards the end of the month. Our predictions favor this movie as it will be releasing in multiple languages, giving it an edge over the other releases and Kangana Ranaut’s star power will also work in the movie’s favor.
July – Sadak 2
Mahesh Bhatt returns to directing with this sequel of his superhit film. It stars his daughters Pooja Bhatt and Alia Bhatt, who share screen space for the first time. Nostalgia will be the no. 1 factor for the film’s success, followed by its star cast, which also includes Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur. Shamshera and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 also release this month too but our money is on the Bhatts.
August – Hungama 2
Once again, we will have a triple release for Independence Day with Bhuj: The Pride of India, Attack, and this Priyadarshan sequel. The Indian audience’s general liking of comedy movies and the prequel’s success would give Hungama 2 an edge over the other films. The end of the month also brings the remake of Jersey, but we’d still pick the Paresh Rawal starrer over the sports drama.
September – Gangubai Kathiawadi
Only two movies have been announced for this month so far – the Sanjay Leela Bhansali drama and Haseen Dillruba. It is no surprise why our predictions favor the former, mainly because of Alia Bhatt’s star power but also because it’s SLB! His larger-than-life approach to cinema has always worked its charm on the audience and it will also be interesting to see Alia in a solo lead role once again.
October – Sardar Udham Singh
Not many movies have been announced for the last quarter of 2020 yet, but from what we know, there’s going to be plenty of star-studded releases. October brings us this biopic by Shoojit Sircar, followed by Satyameva Jayate 2, and Toofan. All the movies have star power but given the Vicky Kaushal drought, fans of the actor are likely to be storming theatres for the biopic film.
November – Maidaan
Akshay and Varun will have more releases coming up later in the year, as Prithviraj and Rannbhoomi clash in this month. Dhaakad also releases around the same time featuring Kangana in the lead role in a female-backed action film, one of Bollywood’s firsts. But our money is on the Ajay Devgn starrer that releases later, which also marks Keerthy Suresh’s debut in Bollywood.
December – Laal Singh Chaddha
Christmas time will see the clash of the Kumar and the Khans. Akshay will be back for the fourth time this year with Bachchan Pandey while Aamir Khan will be making a comeback after Dangal with this Forrest Gump remake. Kareena Kapoor Khan will be sharing screen space with him again so the combined star power might just keep Khiladi Kumar out of the race.
