Starring Arya, Nayanthara, Jai and Nazriya Nazim, Raja Rani was well-appreciated by all and soon became a massive hit. Atlee went on to bag the Vijay Awards for the Best Debut Director. Born in Madurai on 21st September 2018, the director did his schooling in the same city. He later went on to study Visual Communications from Sathyabhama University in Chennai. Soon after, Atlee had the greatest opportunity any upcoming filmmaker can only dream of. He got the chance to work as an assistant director to Director Shankar. Atlee assisted Shankar for big budgeted and massive films like Rajinikanth’s Enthiran (2010) and Vijay’s Nanban (2012). He also directed a few remarkable short films and one such short film was Muggaputhagam (Facebook).

Under the guidance of Shankar, he learnt a lot and soon after went on to direct his debut film titled Raja Rani. Starring Arya, Nayanthara, Jai and Nazriya Nazim, this film tells three love stories. With the tagline “There is life after love failure. There is love after love failure”, Raja Rani succeeded at the box-office and was loved by the audience. This film made the south Indian film industries know that a director had arrived. The second film he directed was Theri (2016). With Vijay aka Thalapathy Vijay playing the lead role, Theri was a gigantic blockbuster. If Raja Rani introduced Atlee to the film world, Theri established him as a top director.

Theri is the story of a police officer named Joseph Kuruvilla who after losing his loved one goes into self-exile and brings up his child. He is soon forced to go back to his old police roots after his child’s life is threatened. A Theri-fic movie, Atlee had another hit to his credit.

For his third film, he joined hands with Vijay yet again. Titled Mersal, this Vijay starrer was the actor’s 61st film and was one of the most-anticipated films of the year 2017. While Vijay has signed to do his 62nd film title Sarkar with A.R. Murugadoss, his 63rd film is said to be a film directed by Atlee.
