Being a part of a television show makes you a household name but somewhere all actors aspire to make it to the big screen. And why not? Films have global reach and you definitely earn more fame and money. Most of them consider TV shows as their first step towards getting a break in Bollywood. A lot of TV stars regularly feature in films but are rarely given important roles. However, some of them do manage to get a full-fledged launch. Here’s a list of actors who have made the coveted successful transition from the idiot box to the big screen.
Sushant Singh Rajput got famous for his character, Manav, in Ekta Kapoor’s serial, Pavitra Rishta. He was later spotted by Ekta’s cousin, Abhishek Kapoor, who launched him in Kai Po Che. After that, Sushant signed a three-film contract with Yash Raj Films and it’s rumored that Aditya Chopra is favouring him over the rest. His next film is Neeraj Pandey’s biopic on Mahendra Singh Dhoni, after which he will shoot for Shekhar Kapur’s Paani.
Kapil started off his career by participating in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and later emerged as the winner. But it was his show, Comedy Nights With Kapil, that made him famous overnight. Yash Raj Films signed him for their production Bank Chor but due to a fallout he was replaced by Riteish Deshmukh. Kapil made his film debut in the recently released film, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, which is doing fairly well at the box-office.
Once you play a bahu on a television show, bagging a glam role in films may be a difficult task. But from a serial called Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kum to films like Vicky Donor and Badlapur, Yami Gautam has definitely come a long way.
She’s another Ekta Kapoor protege and her mentor made sure that she got a big break in Bollywood. It’s said that Ekta played a huge role in helping Prachi bag Abhishek Kapoor’s Rock On in which she was cast opposite Farhan Akhtar. Prachi has also acted in films like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Bol Bachchan. Her next release is Azhar which has Emraan Hashmi in the lead role.
Irrfan Khan acted in serials for the longest time (remember Banegi Apni Baat?). His claim to fame was Maqbool, Vishal Bhardwaj’s adaptation of Macbeth. Irrfan has proved himself to be a brilliant actor and even has Hollywood films like Life of Pi and The Amazing Spider-Man in his filmography.
He’s probably The Reason why television actors have hopes of making it big in Bollywood. Shah Rukh made his screen debut in the TV series, Fauji, in 1988 (!). The rest, as they say, is history.
