Born as Prabhu Sundaram, Prabhu Deva is touted to be the best dancer in India. Being known as the Indian Michael Jackson for the longest time, one may assume that his only inspiration is the King of Pop. But this is not true. Our very own moonwalker found his first inspiration at home, his father. Yes! Not known to many of us, Prabhu Deva's father Mugur Sundar is an ace choreographer who is known popularly as Master Sundaram in the South Indian film industry.
The choreographer-turned-actor-turned-director has a number of Bollywood and South Indian films to his credit. So on his birthday, let's see the various hats donned by this superstar.
An actor and a dancer
He began his career as an actor with the movie Kadhalan (1994) directed by Shankar, which saw some of Prabhu Deva's sick dance moves in the hugely popular songs Muqabla and Urvasi Urvasi. The movie was then dubbed into Hindi and Telugu and both were immensely successful. His second project Raasaiyya (1995) didn't do well at the box-office. His next two projects Mr. Romeo and Love Birds, which had music provided by A.R. Rahman, saw Prabhu Deva's dance skills praised highly.
His other movies include Minsara Kanavu (1997) starring Kajol and Arvind Swamy, Kadhala Kadhala (1998) which also starred Kamal Haasan,
The 'Vennilave' number by A.R. Rahman, which had both Kajol and Prabhu Deva dancing beautifully to it was highly appreciated and he also won the National Film Award For Best Choreographer for this song. This movie was later dubbed into Hindi as Sapnay and the song 'Chanda re chanda re' became quite popular around that time.
His other popular choreographed dances are Main Aisa Kyun Hoon (Lakshya – 2004), in the dance movie ABCD (2013) as choreographer Vishnu Sir.
Prabhu Deva made his directorial debut with the charming movie Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2004) which starred Siddharth and Trisha in the main lead. His second directorial venture was the Prabhas starrer Pournami (2006), which was soon followed by the immensely successful action movie Pokkiri (2007) starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay in the lead role. The film was then made in Hindi titled Wanted (2009) with Salman Khan playing the lead role and we all know it was a complete paisa vasool movie.
As this phenomenal artist turns a year older, we wish him a very happy birthday.
