20 Indian Film Artists Get Invited To Be Members Of The Oscars Academy

Oscar has been under fire for not being diverse enough. They already had faced criticisms notably when the industry made accusations with #OscarsSoWhite.

For the past couple of years, the Academy has been trying to fix this rampant issue of racism in the film industry by electing members from diverse backgrounds so every culture feels that their story is represented on screen. One such effort is to invite members from diverse film industries to nominate films for future ceremonies.

This time around they have made a real effort. The Academy has invited a list of 20 contributors from Indian cinema.

The list includes names like Madhuri Dixit, Madhabi Mukherjee, Soumitra Chatterjee, Naseeruddin Shah, Shah Rukh Khan, Ali Fazal, Anil Kapoor and Tabu.

The invitees also include producers, sound designers, cinematographers. Guneet Monga, the producer of acclaimed movies like The LunchboxHaraamkhor is on the list and so is Aditya Chopra.

Indian cinematography too gets a nod here, Anil Mehta who worked on projects like Beyond the Clouds and Highway has also been invited.

Here’s hoping that Indian cinema will be represented at the Oscars with these changes. These people have a lot to contribute to the world of cinema.

This movement to bring diversity to a forum that is so highly esteemed could change how the world views cinema and help acknowledge art in the real sense – without race, cultural or linguistic barriers.
