Back in the day, at least in India, beauty pageants were a big thing! Almost every year, people (especially mothers and daughters) would be super excited to watch beautiful contestants prove themselves at the pageants. And every year, we would hope that India would bring home the crown and prove that it’s a country of beautiful people. But is this the only purpose of a beauty pageant? If you think about it, these contests are actually held to pick a face, a brand ambassador, who would represent various causes and charities and spread awareness about them and bring change in the world. And anyone who proves themselves and wins such international pageants, get instant recognition. But what they do with that recognition and use it to bring change, is what makes them memorable.

She was the original Wonder Woman and because of this role, she became super popular and gained a lot of appreciation from her fans. She is also a singer and a songwriter. Apart from that, she supports a lot of causes such as pro-choice rights for women, legal equality for LGBT people, and many more. She was also the Grand Marshal at the pride parades that were held in New York and Washington.
Diane Sawyer – America’s Junior Miss (1963)
She is America’s most respected journalist. After winning the crown, she went to travel around the country to promote the New York World’s Fair, as a part of her duties. Maybe this helped her sharpen her interviewing skills, which led her to become a broadcast journalist. At the start of her career, she had also been a member of U.S. President Richard Nixon’s White House staff. Now she works for ABC News and has interviewed famous personalities such as Malala Yousfzai, Hillary Clinton, and many more. She has also won several awards for her work and was featured twice on the Forbes’ list of world’s most powerful women.
Gal Gadot – Miss Israel (2004)
At the age of 18, she won Miss Israel beauty pageant and went on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. When she turned 20, she served in the Israel Defense Forces for two years. After her service, she made her Hollywood debut with the Fast & Furious film series. She played the role of Gisele Yashar. Priyanka Chopra – Miss World (2000)
The West remembers her for her badass lead role in Quantico, but for us, she is the desi girl who made India proud by winning the Miss World crown in 2000. From there, she stepped into Bollywood and blew us away with her performances. Now she will be seen making her big debut in Hollywood movies through Baywatch. Apart from that she was the first South Asian to win the People’s Choice Award, she has been awarded a Padma Shri award by the Government of India, she is a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, and according to Times Magazine, she is on the list of 100 most influential people in the world.
Aishwarya Rai – Miss World (1994)
She is touted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Before winning the Miss World crown in 1994, Aishwarya had already made her mark in the modeling industry. After winning the pageant, she was showered with offers to star in Bollywood and regional movies, making her one of the most popular actresses in India. She has also earned recognition internationally. In 2003, she became the first actress to be a juror at the Cannes Film Festival. But even with that, Aishwarya made sure that she was involved with as many charities as possible in order to give back to the society. For all her hard work, she has been awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India and Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a national order of France.
Oprah Winfrey – Miss Black Tennessee (1971)
She was the anchor of the world’s most successful talk show. Through her TV show, she has interviewed world’s most successful and famous personalities. She has managed to touch the lives of her viewers and provided them hope and direction during their darkest hours. Such is her impact – no wonder the show went on for 25 years! As of now, she is the world’s first African-American multi-billionaire in North America. According to Forbes Magazine, she has been on the list of 100 most powerful people in the world, multiple times – we’d really be surprised if she wasn’t!
