Some movie characters come to be ‘owned’ by certain actors. Take the Harry Potter franchise, for example. We’re so used to Daniel Radcliffe playing The Boy Who Lived that we could never imagine anyone else playing that part. The same could be said for Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, and Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. However, there have been times when new actors have been brought on board for old characters. It is a risky choice, since sometimes they work and sometimes, they just don’t. Here are some casting choices that came as huge surprises to the film fraternity and the audience.
Jared Leto in Suicide Squad
When Jack Nicholson played the Clown Prince of Crime, nobody thought his performance could be topped. Then came Heath Ledger as the Joker, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, and changed history. He became arguably the best Joker ever, but now there’s a new guy – Jared Leto. He looks the part, but can he do justice to the role?
Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
When you look at Christian Bale’s Batman, there’s a certain charm and magnetism he exudes. The favorite face for the Caped Crusader, Bale has fans everywhere. However, for Batman v Superman, director Zack Snyder decided to go with Ben Affleck for the role. We can only hope he does half as well as Bale, who had the audience completely hooked!
Michael B. Jordan in Fantastic Four
Now this one made news and created quite a furore on the internet. When you look at Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four comics, he’s a white, blue-eyed boy. However, the makers of Fantastic Four decided to pick Michael B. Jordan for the role in the upcoming movie, making him the first African-American to play the role. While we’re convinced he’ll make a brilliant Johnny Storm, it’s still a notable departure from the comics.
Jesse Eisenberg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
When you look at Lex Luthor from the original comics, there’s a distinguishing feature you can’t really miss – he’s bald! However, in the new BvS trailer, Jesse Eisenberg shows off his long locks! Lex Luthor is an old guy, and he’s a bulky figure in the comics. While there is no doubt Eisenberg is going to kill as Lex, he looks a little green for the part.
Ed Skrein in Transporter Refueled
Remember the Transporter films? You probably remember them for one reason – Jason Statham! The stocky character with a dangerous past became a household name playing Frank Martin but now he has been replaced by Ed Skrein! We hope we’re as blown away by Skrein, as we were by Statham!
Daniel Radcliffe in Victor Frankenstein
Again, Daniel Radcliffe is most popular as “the guy who played Harry Potter”. We recognize him as the bespectacled Boy Who Lived, but not as Igor, the evil hunchback assistant to Dr. Frankenstein! Igor was envisioned as an ugly man, with a hunched back and bulging eyes. Radcliffe is a far cry from that picture!
So there you have it- some of the most controversial character choices in movies. Let us know if you think someone else should be on this list!
