Since the beginning of time, humans have been dabbling in the arcane arts and the occult. While this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there are quite a few people out there who indulge in creepy rituals like voodoo dolls, drinking blood, avoiding sunlight and much more. You’d be surprised with the sort of stuff that goes around in these extreme cults. However, what left us a tad more surprised was that a few of our favorite actors were a part of cults like these in their heyday. Now, don’t judge but here are some that made us raise an eyebrow.

Rose McGowan – The Children of God

The Charmed star was a part of this notorious cult, which abolished any form of imperfection. The cult encouraged relations between children and adults. McGowan recalled in an interview with People magazine in 2011 that as a child, an adult member of the cult dragged her into a room, and sliced off a wart on her thumb with a blade. Errrm!

Michelle Pfeiffer – Breatharianism

In an interview in 2013, the Scarface actress revealed that she was part of a cult called Breatharianism, at the age of 20. The cult believed in sustaining oneself with only air and sunlight, and avoiding food and water. Needless to say, Pfeiffer later realised she wasn’t a plant, and had to eat. And for their own sake, we hope other members of the cult did too.

Joaquin Phoenix – The Children of God

Like Rose McGowan, Phoenix was also a part of the infamous cult. Along with his siblings, River, Rain, Liberty and Summer, he remembers leaving it as soon as his parents realized there was more than just like-minded people sharing ideas. The family relocated, and changed their last names from Bottom to Phoenix, symbolizing a fresh start.

Angel Haze – Greater Apostolic Faith

Rapper and singer Angel Haze was a part of the Greater Apostolic Faith as a teenager. She remembers living in the same community, not being allowed to talk to anyone outside of the community, not being able to wear jewelry, listen to music, eat certain food items, date certain people, and much more. Finally, fed up with all the restrictions, she moved to New York at the age of 16 to pursue a music career.

Christopher Owens – Children of God

The popular frontman of the now-disbanded band Girls, Christopher Owens was also a part of the Children of God cult as a child. The cult forbade any medical attention, due to which, his two-year-old brother died of pneumonia. Owens’ mother often had to beg on the streets to support her children, and the musician likened his time with the cult to living with the Taliban.

Strange are the ways of the world, yes.
