Sci-fi, comedy, drama – Downsizing has it all!
Director: Alexander Payne
Release Date: January 12, 2018
One of Hollywood’s latest releases for the week is a fun movie with lots of familiar faces. Matt Damon, who needs no introduction, pairs up with Kristen Wiig (one of the badasses from Ghostbusters) with a colorful mix of supporting actors like Jason Sudeikis, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau in the sci-fi comedy drama titled Downsizing. The movie has been co-written and directed by Alexander Payne – the same guy who wrote and directed The Descendants in 2011. Downsizing has been making a buzz because of its supporting actress Chau, who has received several nominations for her role. There’s a lot more to this film and its trailer is one of the reasons we want to watch it in theatres this weekend.
As we can see, Downsizing has an interesting plot. It reminds us of the sci-fi comedy of our childhood, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, where similarly, regular-sized humans were shrunk to miniature versions of themselves. Payne’s movie uses this concept to tackle the problem of over-population. If humans were “downsized” to 0.364% of our normal size, there would be a lot more resources for us to share. In the trailer, we see that a community has been built for people who wish to undergo the procedure. Their refined lives are more comfortable, lavish and overall, improved. The trailer does not show the downside of the same, but we guess that’s why we need to watch the full movie to know.
Downsizing hits theatres this Friday, three weeks after its US release. The film has also been screened at a number of international film festivals, with favorable reviews. The cast has been one of the top reasons why people wish to watch this movie, followed by its innovative storyline, and the award season buzz. What will be your reason to watch the film?
