One of the latest movie trailers to leave us speechless is Candyman. A supernatural slasher film, this is the fourth movie in the Candyman franchise, which began in 1992. The sequels Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999) followed in 1995 and 1999 respectively and the latest film is said to be a direct sequel to the 1992 film. The movie was scheduled for a release on the 12th of June, but is now postponed due to the ongoing global pandemic. While a new release date is slated to be in September, the trailer of the film came out a month ago and it’s even scarier than we expected. See it for yourselves below and keep reading to know why you need to watch this horror fest on the big screen.
A sequel to the 1992 film of the same name, Candyman is based in Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood, which is stalked by a supernatural killer. A visual artist and his girlfriend move there and uncover the secrets behind the ghost’s existence, leading to a terrifying wave of violence. You’ve got to have a strong stomach to handle this slasher film.
The story is based on an old legend
Candyman is not just any random killer but a supernatural entity who has been around for a long time. He was murdered in the 19th century but keeps coming back for revenge. Candyman has a hook for a hand and is summoned by people who on a whimsical dare utter his name five times in front of a mirror. Once he appears, there is no sending him back.
Jordan Peele has produced it
You know it’s a good horror film when there’s a powerhouse crew attached to it. Creator of recent horror blockbusters like Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele has co-produced Candyman alongside Ian Cooper and Win Rosenfeld. The movie is directed by Nia DaCosta, whose previous works include 2018 crime thriller Little Woods.
You’ve seen the cast before
The main cast of the film includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who appeared briefly in Us. He has also played significant roles in The Greatest Showman (2017), and Aquaman (2018). His girlfriend is played by Teyonah Parris, who had a recurring role on Mad Men. Colman Domingo plays an old resident of the neighborhood who knows the secrets of Candyman.
It’s the horror movie of the year
Even though 2020 is bringing us some amazing horror movies like A Quiet Place – Part 2, The Conjuring 3 and Malignant, we cannot help but feel that Candyman will be the best of them all. You cannot go wrong with Jordan Peele, whether it’s comedy or horror, and this film will be a treat to watch on the big screen.
