6 LGBTQ+ Movie Characters Who Inspire Everyone

It is June, which means we have a month of celebrating the growing acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. The path that should have been barely an inconvenience has not been easy and even in 2020, the LGBTQ+ community still has their battles laid out for them. When it comes to normalizing LGBTQ+,  some credit can be given to recent movies where they have gone from including a token LGBTQ+ character with stereotypical traits to letting them be a part of the story without letting their sexuality being the only thing about their character. As we start our journey into the pride month, we would like to go back and look at LGBTQ+ movie characters who are inspiring.

Simon from Love, Simon

It is one of the first movies to focus on a gay teenage romance where Simon, apart from becoming an adult, has an added responsibility of coming out. How he navigates through both these situations is certainly worth knowing.

Rayon from Dallas Buyer’s Club

This is movie is set during the AIDS crisis and we are introduced to Rayon, who is a transgender woman and also HIV positive. Jared Leto won an Academy Award for his performance and watching him as Rayon handling both these things when they were taboo is nothing short of inspiring.

Amy from Booksmart

While it is great to watch LGBTQ+ characters from a different time trying to succeed against so many odds, today’s generation also wants a representation of what they go through on the screen. That is why teen movies involving LGBTQ+ characters are so important. Amy from Booksmart is another character who shows us that going to high school as a lesbian can be a little different.

Albus Dumbledore from the Wizarding World movies

Long after the Harry Potter books and movies were done, J.K. Rowling announced that Dumbledore is gay. We were all ready to accept that canon. The greatest wizard we know whose piece of advice has always been so inspiring remains so irrespective of his sexuality and we can’t wait to see more of that in the Fantastic Beasts movies.

Harvey Milk from Milk

There have been a lot of real people who have worked very hard in bringing about the changes we see today. One of them is Harvey Milk who was the first openly gay man to get elected to public office in California. His story is an inspiration to all of us even today.

Ricky Jones from Boy Meets Girl

There was a dearth of transgender characters in mainstream movies or them having a happy ending at the end of the movie. Ricky Jones is one of the starting points to bring about this change. Ricky is a barista with dreams to become a fashion designer and even finds love at the end.
