Ali Fazal – From Bollywood Hero to Hollywood Star

September has been a great month for movies so far. Hollywood gave us the ultimate horror with It, while Bollywood entertained us with gems like Lucknow Central and Simran. And even though Bollywood stars are doing everything they can to stay relevant and promote their films, it’s an underrated actor from UP who is making the buzz this week. This actor has made his mark in Bollywood with a few surprise hits, but it his international debut that is getting all the attention. After Priyanka Chopra and Deepika PadukoneAli Fazal is now starring in a British-American film, Victoria & Abdul.

If you have not seen the trailer of Victoria & Abdul, it stars Fazal along with Dame Judi Dench in the lead roles. Dench plays the British monarch Queen Victoria, who strikes an unlikely friendship with her Indian servant, Abdul Karim, played by Fazal. Based on an important relationship in history, Victoria and Abdul has already created waves at the Venice Film Festival, and more recently, the Toronto Film Festival. The movie already released in the UK last month and is scheduled to release here next week. Starring our very own Indian actor, we are naturally excited for Ali Fazal in this new role.

Fazal began his acting career with theatre. He participated in school plays and was even given a role in an adaptation of The Tempest by William Shakespeare. His first on screen role was a small appearance in an Indian-American romantic comedy, The Other End of the Line. He also made an appearance on American television way before PeeCee did, with a miniseries called Bollywood Hero (2009). But he was far from a hero in Bollywood, with only two movies and a special appearance in 3 Idiots in his kitty. It was the 2013 comedy film, Fukrey, where he finally got his big break.

Ali Fazal played one of the main roles in Fukrey, alongside Pulkit SamratVarun Sharma, and Manjot Singh. His career only went upward from there. He starred in two women-centric films, Bobby Jasoos and Sonali Cableand later even made a special appearance in Furious 7. He achieved success with Happy Bhag Jayegi, a rom-com starring Fazal alongside Diana PentyAbhay Deol, and Jimmy Shergill. Victoria & Abdul is his first film this year and Fazal definitely impresses.

With the never-ending nepotism debate, it’s great to see actors like Ali Fazal rising above the ranks and proving that talent does have a place in Bollywood. If not, you could always try your luck with Hollywood. Ali did and he succeeded. We wish him all the best for the upcoming movie.
