The fourth film in the rebooted X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix re-introduces us to the younger versions of the mutants that we know from the original movies. We’ve seen young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and many more. Who is Dark Phoenix, you ask? It’s Jean Grey – the most powerful mutant ever. Jean Grey/Phoenix is being played by Sophie Turner who you might recognize as Sansa Stark from the legendary fantasy series, Game of Thrones.
The teaser trailer of Dark Phoenix gives us the first look at the events that go wrong and turn Jean Grey against everyone. We’ve already seen Jean Grey meet her end in X-Men: The Last Stand as Wolverine faces off against the love of his life. Now, we will get to witness how it all began.
The trailer shows us the return of many of our favorites. Jennifer Lawrence is back as Mystique and so are James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult. We also see the return of Tye Sheridan (who we’ve seen in Ready Player One), reprising his role as Scott Summers/Cyclops from X-Men: Apocalypse. Another return from Apocalypse is Kodi Smit-McPhee (recently seen in the surprise hit Alpha) playing Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler while Alexandra Shipp also returns to play the young Ororo Munroe/Storm and Evan Peters is back as Peter Maximoff /Quicksilver.
Here are the individual looks at these characters with the recently released poster:
We’ve also got a deeper look at the dark origin story with two new trailers for the film. It is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, and how she evolves into the seemingly indomitable Dark Phoenix. As the film’s synopsis states – “During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet.”
Here’s the final Dark Phoenix trailer in case you haven’t had a chance to see it yet:
This intense edition of the X-Men movies is touted to be the most emotional one yet. 20 years of X-Men films come to a close with this film as the last entry from 20th Century Fox before the franchise is rebooted by Disney. Dark Phoenix’s origin story puts the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love up against their most powerful nemesis yet – one of their own.
With Simon Kinberg writing and directing the film, Dark Phoenix is set to hit cinema screens on the 7th of June. Whether it will be a good send-off before we witness the effects of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox is yet to be seen. We might even expect to see the X-Men appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point. Before that, let’s strap ourselves in for this exciting X-Men showdown.
Stay tuned to this space for our review of Dark Phoenix.
