The film adaptation of Stephen King’s It released in 2017 and it became a massive success. According to Box Office Mojo, the Andrés Muschietti directorial was the highest-grossing horror movie ever made. Stephen King’s book on the evil pursuits of Pennywise the Dancing Clown was split into two, so it was natural that a sequel was going to follow. But It’s success was so huge, that the second movie was announced within days of the first one’s release and soon after, the new cast members were also revealed. Two years later, we have had the first peek into what awaits us in It: Chapter 2. The Loser’s Club returns to Derry, where the events in the first movie took place and this movie is set in 2016 – 27 years after the first one. Pennywise will be back too – as he has been prophesized to make his return after every 27 years – and he is ready to strike again. Here’s why It: Chapter 2 could exceed our expectations:
1. The Losers are back in a new avatar
Since the movie is set 27 years after the first one, the kids from the previous movie are now all grown up and set to be portrayed by some very famous people. The character of Bill Denbrough, the former leader of the Club, is played by James McAvoy, who most of you will remember as Charles Xavier in the X-Men series. Jessica Chastain (known for brilliant performances in A Most Violent Year, Miss Sloane, and Molly’s Game) portrays Beverly Marsh, the only female member of the Club. Bill Hader from SNL and Barry takes on Richie Tozier, while Jay Ryan (from the series Beauty & the Beast) plays a now-thin Ben Hanscom. Isaiah Mustafa portrays Mike Hanlon, the only black member of the group, as James Ransone stars as Eddie Kaspbrak and Andy Bean is the new Stan Uris.
2. The kids from the last movie make a comeback too
Just because there are new faces portraying your old favorites does not mean you won’t be seeing the kids from the first film. They all make appearances in Chapter 2, as the story delves into flashback sequences. So be prepared to see Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Wyatt Oleff on the screen once again. The story will also explain what happened to each member of the Loser’s Club right after the events of the first movie and how they all came to leave Derry. Jackson Robert Scott is also set to make a comeback as Ben’s brother, Georgie Denbrough, whose disappearance kickstarted the events in the first movie.
3. Bill Skarsgård reprises his role as Pennywise
But main cast aside, the highly important character of the movies whom everyone is most excited to see is undoubtedly Pennywise, the evil clown. Bill Skarsgård portrayed the clown in It and he will be seen in this one too as Pennywise has not aged a day since the last movie. He was simply in deep slumber but 27 years later, he is ready to kill again.
4. The story has been penned by Gary Dauberman
Stephen King’s book has been adapted for the screen by none other than Gary Dauberman, whose repertoire of horror films includes Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, The Curse of the Weeping Woman, and Annabelle Comes Home. So horror movie fans are in for a treat as Gary is known not to give us a smooth-sailing ride. In fact, It: Chapter 2 might just be gorier than ever.
5. Things in Derry are about to get much worse
A short clip from the film was released earlier this year, which shows the return of Beverly Marsh to Derry. She visits her old home, which is now inhabited by an old woman. After being invited in for tea, Bev glances at the photos in the house, many of which feature her biggest nightmare. We also get a short glimpse of Pennywise himself, looking scarier than ever. After the events of the last movie, the evil clown is back for more blood and with the return of the Loser’s Club, he is bound to be seeking revenge.
6. The new film is supposedly woke AF
It’s 2019 and if you are not addressing a political issue, have you even made a film? Writer Gary Dauberman confirms that It: Chapter 2 will feature a hate crime scene in which a gay character is attacked by some homophobic teenagers. But the filmmakers haven’t just included this scene to look woke, in fact, it is featured in the book too. The movie is set to make a strong political stance against violence and also delves into Bev’s history of abuse at the hands of her father.
7. It: Chapter 2 will be gorier than GoT
If you were expecting lots of gore from the seventh season of Game of Thrones but were let down, this movie might make up for some of it. The writer has confirmed in an interview that this is no kids’ movie and there will be full justice to the horrible murders by Pennywise. So if you have a weak stomach, beware! Lots of scary stuff is about to go down at Derry and you only make it out alive if you are prepared for the evil clown’s madness.
Pennywise is ready to float his way back into your nightmares on the 6th of September. So join the Loser’s Club to put an end to him once and for all. Click on “Interested” for more updates on the film.
