Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle exceeded all expectations anyone had from a reboot of a classic film that nobody had asked for. It was a delightful mix of adventure and comedy. But it was the main cast consisting of Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart playing new avatars that made the film really great. The first film ended on a good note – the teenagers beat the game and escaped back into the real world – but it was hard to see where the makers would go from there. The actors had already played teenagers and the sequel would need to have something more astounding to offer if it was going to cross the 962 million that the first film made at the box office. Thankfully, director Jake Kasdan hasn’t disappointed us and we’ve got the first glimpse of Jumanji: The Next Level, which features all-new players who aren’t just more teenagers.
Danny DeVito is one of the newest additions to the cast. He plays Eddie, the grandfather of Spencer Gilpin, the awkward teenager who had become Dr. Smolder Bravestone in the game. Danny Glover is another addition to the cast and he is playing Eddie’s friend, Milo. The trailer shows Spencer’s teenage friends and the two elders getting sucked into the game. Spencer and Bethany, however, aren’t in their usual avatars. Dr. Smolder Bravestone is now Eddie instead of Spencer. Fridge has become Jack Black’s character, Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon instead of Bethany. Kevin Hart’s character Franklin “Mouse” Finbar is now Milo’s avatar. Nick Jonas is also back as Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough and it’s quite likely that he’ll be either Spencer or Bethany. Another new addition to the cast is Awkwafina, who is shown to be inside the game.
As the trailer for Jumanji: The Next Level also shows them across different landscapes so the game won’t be limited to the jungle anymore. Read our review of this film here.
