Star Wars is one of the highest-grossing franchises that has millions of fans across the world. The two previous films of the new trilogy released in December in time for Christmas and were one of the top-grossing films in the years they were released. This year, we have the last Star Wars film of the current trilogy releasing, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and expectations are higher than ever. While there will still be something for Star Wars fans to look forward to with Disney+ shows, there isn’t going to be another Star Wars film until December 2022. There has been a lot of secrecy around the film with even the title being under wraps until a few months ago. But from what we do know, there’s already been enough revealed to give the fans something to look forward to:

1. J. J. Abrams is back as a director

J. J. Abrams had directed the first film in the trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had been a massive hit, both critically and with the fans. The second film had been directed by Rian Johnson, whose take had been a little controversial, hurting the success of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, J. J. Abrams is back in the director’s chair and as a writer.

2. Carrie Fisher’s Leia will be seen again

Carrie Fisher‘s tragic death in 2016 was a huge blow to her fans. Through unused footage from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, she will be seen as Leia for the final time in The Rise of Skywalker. The trailer has already shown us a glimpse of her with Rey and there are probably going to be more impactful scenes with Fisher in the film.

3. There’s going to be an epic team-up

The Resistance is still going strong with our favorite characters Rey, Poe, Chewbacca, and Finn re-united. They are joined by our favorite robots and droids – C-3PO, R2D2, and BB-8. We also have a cute new droid, D-O, who’s shown to accompany BB-8. The final showdown is sure to be worth the wait as Rey is seen in the trailers to be training and becoming stronger and Kylo Ren seems determined to fight as well.

4. Emperor Palpatine is back

Emperor Palpatine was one of the biggest villains in the original trilogy. His return has been embraced by the fans and we’ve heard his menacing voice in the trailers, but we’ll have to wait for the film to see him. We know Ian McDiarmid will be reprising his role but there’s sure to be a surprise when it comes to his final look.

5. Lightsaber Fights

Fans were excited to see Luke’s original lightsaber with Rey in the trailers. There are sure to be some stunning lightsaber fights, which is what everyone is going to be looking forward to. We get a small glimpse of it in the trailers and we can’t wait for the film to see more!
