Angelina Jolie is back with a sequel to her 2014 film Maleficent, which was a re-telling of the age-old Disney classic, Sleeping Beauty. Five years later, we get the first glimpse of Maleficent: Mistress of All Evil that shows how life has changed for Maleficent and Aurora since Maleficent broke the spell that she had placed over her ‘daughter.’
While this mother-daughter duo may have had a happy ending in this first film, the sequel shows us that they are not going to be seeing eye-to-eye over lots of things including Aurora’s marriage to Prince Philip from the neighboring kingdom. Michelle Pfeiffer who is set to play the role of Prince Philip’s mother provokes Maleficent by saying, “You have done an admirable job going against your own nature to raise this child. But now, she will finally get the love of a real mother. Tonight I consider Aurora my own.” The Queen clearly has her own selfish agendas at play that will result in a full-blown war between the two kingdoms. Will this war do more harm than good? It remains to be seen. The end of the trailer also shows us that Maleficent isn’t alone in this world and there they are other horned fairies of her kind.
Directed by Joachim Rønning, Maleficent: Mistress of All Evil also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (who is set to voice scar in the upcoming 2019 Lion King remake), Ed Skrein, Juno Temple (who was also part of first Maleficent film), Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, and Robert Lindsay. Disney has been making us nostalgic by treating us to several live-action remakes. It started with Dumbo, then Aladdin, and now debuting on July 19 we have Lion King. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the final Disney live-action remake of 2019, which is slated to hit theatres on October 18.
