After Michael Bay‘s departure from the franchise, Transformers is all set to bring out its latest film under new direction with Bumblebee. A prequel that’s also a spin-off, this film will be releasing in theaters this January 4. Director Travis Knight will be adding some heart to the franchise as we see Bee’s humble origins from when he was Hailee Steinfeld‘s car long before he met Shia LeBeouf‘s character. But of course, there’s a lot more happening as we’ll see some more popular Transformers like Optimus Prime, Shatter, and Dropkick pack in the action in the upcoming film. If this hasn’t convinced you to add Bumblebee to your watchlist yet, we have some similar films that will change your mind.
Before the Transformers franchise got too complicated to follow with time jumps, multiple storylines, and its several lead characters, Transformers had a special place. It was the introduction for many to the world of these giant robots that could turn into cool cars and even help out a guy land a date with Megan Fox. Bumblebee is sure to bring back the wonder of the first film.
The Iron Giant
Featuring one of the sweetest giant robots ever, The Iron Giant was the directorial debut of Brad Bird (the same guy who’s behind The Incredibles). It shows how a strong director can have a hand in making a film that has had such long-lasting popularity that it was even a major part of this year’s Ready Player One.
Kubo and the Two Strings
Speaking of directorial debuts, Kubo and the Two Strings was the debut of Bumblebee director Travis Knight. While it may have been just an animated film, it had stunning action sequences and it was even nominated for two Oscar awards. We’re sure that with Bumblebee, we’ll get an emotional core that was very prominent in this film.
Big Hero 6
Bumblebee isn’t just about the robots, it’s also about the meaningful connection shared between a human and a robot. Big Hero 6 showed how Hiro and Baymax became such close friends that they would do anything for each other. Bumblebee also comes to earth to protect humans but he seems to forge a greater bond with Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld).
Real Steel is another film that features fighting robots. While these are built by humans to fight in boxing rings, there’s plenty of action that comes with it. After all, there can’t be a movie with giant robots without us seeing how well they can fight each other and humans. Real Steel also had some great performances, most notably by Hugh Jackman, and in Bumblebee, we’re looking forward to some equally great acting by Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena.
