Movies, in recent times, have been inspired by a variety of storylines from other forms of entertainment. When the original versions pick up their own set of audiences, it is only fitting that these stories are retold on the 70mm screen. There are plenty of great games out there with elaborate and exciting storylines with a following and cults of their own which Hollywood has turned into movies over the years and there are more on the way. So, here are some movies which have been inspired by video games, mobile games, or online games.

Mortal Kombat (1995)

Who doesn’t love a good fight to the death featuring martial arts? Mortal Kombat is one of the most successful fighting franchises in the history of video games. Even though many knew about the game before the movie was released, the fantasy-themed fighting game became even more popular worldwide after the release of the 1995 film.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019)

Created by a Japanese video game designer named Satoshi Tajiri in 1995, the Pokémon franchise is easily a pop culture sensation. There have been plenty of adaptations from card games and video games to TV shows and movies. Tomb Raider (2018)

This action-adventure game featuring the character Lara Croft was launched in 1996 and was very popular, with over 7.5 million copies sold worldwide. A remake was released in the year 2007 to celebrate its 10th anniversary with another reboot in 2013. The 2001 movie starring Angelina Jolie was one of the highest grossing movies of the time. The Tomb Raider films also got a reboot, with Alicia Vikander taking Jolie’s place to become the new Lara Croft and a sequel is also planned.

Resident Evil Series (2002 – 2016)

The Japanese game franchise of Resident Evil took the concept of survival gaming to a whole new level with the outbreak of zombies and other monsters that players needed to fight to survive. Although Resident Evil films were only loosely based on the video games, it gave the fans exactly what they wanted – fast-paced action in a familiar setting. Warcraft (2016)

Based on the series made up of five core games including the incredibly popular World of Warcraft, this film takes place before the game. It depicted the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs and takes place in a variety of locations established in the video game series. Despite receiving negative reviews, the film surpassed $400 million worldwide as one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations of all-time.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

The game was first released by Ubisoft in 1989 and has upgraded over the years. In 2003, a reboot of the Prince of Persia series called The Sands of Time was released and in 2010 that game got its movie adaptation with the same title – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, and Ben Kingsley among others. The movie was released by Walt Disney Pictures and was well-received by the audience.

Assassin’s Creed (2016)

This movie starring Michael Fassbender was based on the game of the same name, which follows a cult of assassins through a fictional history of real-world events. There have been nine games in the series so far and it has also been Ubisoft’s highest grossing franchise. Assassin’s Creed received mostly positive reviews for its slick action, quality CGI, and beautiful visuals. Read our review of the film here >>

The Angry Birds Movie (2016)

What began as a casual puzzle game back in 2009, Angry Birds is now a massively successful franchise. Once the mobile game began rising in popularity, it was impossible to walk into a toy store without being bombarded with merchandise which eventually led to the release of the first film back in 2016. The film grossed millions worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing film of all time to be based on a video game at the time. Gaming may not be everyone’s cup of tea but there is no doubt that there are some real gems hidden there.
