Here We Go Again!
It has been 10 years since the first Mamma Mia movie, where Meryl played one of her most iconic roles. This movie had everything – romance, music, comedy, and friendship. Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper made the star couple of the film, while the camaraderie between Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters was undeniably sweet. The movie also gave us three heartthrobs in Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård. Now, after a decade, the new Mamma Mia movie will hit the theatres on the 3rd of August, 2018. Titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the romantic musical comedy brings back the old cast with some new characters. Here’s what you need to watch out for:
Joining the original cast are Lily James, who plays a young Donna (Meryl Streep), Jessica Keenan Wynn as a young Tanya (Christine Baranski), and Alexa Davies as a young Rosie (Julie Walters). James first gained popularity in the TV show, Downton Abbey, after which she has played important roles in many movies such as Cinderella, Baby Driver, and Darkest Hour. There are also three new heartthrobs to watch out for – Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner, and Josh Dylan.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will bring back the iconic music of ABBA – the Swedish band who were highly successful in the ‘80s and ‘90s. If you grew up listening to songs like Dancing Queen, Waterloo, Fernando, Take a Chance on Me, The Winner Takes It All, Gimme Gimme Gimme, and more, you have to relive the nostalgia in Mamma Mia 2. The movie will feature only the songs of ABBA that will be performed by the cast during the movie.
Mamma Mia 2 is a sequel and a prequel to the original movie. The movie begins five years after the events of Mamma Mia, when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is running her mother’s villa. Meanwhile, her relationship is in trouble and she fears living without both her husband and her mother, who has been (spoiler alert!) dead for a year. She seeks comfort in her mother’s best friends, who take her back to the time when her mother was in a similar place – alone and pregnant.
Mamma Mia was shot in the Greek island of Skopelos, where Sophie owns a villa overlooking the beautiful seaside landscape. The set is enough to take your breath away and it is here where the second movie will also pick up. The movie later travels to the United States and France in the flashback periods. Even if you don’t enjoy the music of ABBA (Seriously, who doesn’t?), go watch this movie only for its cinematography.
Yes, we know that we have already mentioned that the cast is the best thing about this movie but surely Cher deserves an exclusive mention. The singer/actress makes an appearance as Donna’s estranged mother and Sophie’s grandmother, Ruby Sheridan. We can expect a lot of drama revolving around the character and probably even a performance or two starring the musical legend. Other special appearances include Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from ABBA.
