First things first, let’s get the inevitable Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman comparisons out of the way. Yes, Rocketman is a biopic like Bohemian Rhapsody and they both focus on iconic musicians who were popular for their larger-than-life personas, sold record-breaking albums, and became living legends. However, Freddie Mercury didn’t have much of a say in how his life was depicted in Bohemian Rhapsody and there were production issues on set as well, with Dexter Fletcher coming in to replace Bryan Singer during the filming of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Everything worked out in the end for the Queen biopic as it won an Oscar and had a fantastic collection at the box office earning over 900 million USD and became one of the most successful films of 2018. Though Rocketman releases just a few months after Bohemian Rhapsody, it had actually been in development for almost 20 years. Rocketman is finally coming to theaters in a few weeks and is being directed by Dexter Fletcher. It will hopefully succeed along the same lines and be the next hit musical biopic that’s winning awards.
Although Elton John might not be hitting the top of Billboard charts regularly these days, he still remains a magnetic performer who has millions of fans across the world. His career spans half a century, which is a great feat in itself, but Elton also has a horde of awards that are proof of his musical greatness. He has been actively involved in the making of Rocketman.

Unlike the usual biopics that try to tame down the real-life events, the film reportedly won’t try to tiptoe around some controversial parts of his life. Rocketman has received an adult rating, which makes it even more likely that we might get a peek at the crazy things that happen in a rock star’s life behind the stage. Rocketman will follow Elton John’s rise to fame and is going to be told through his memories. It is not going to be a straight-cut biopic, but rather a fantastical journey through some of the most notable years of his life.
With this film, Taron Egerton goes from Kingsman to Rocketman. He’s already shown his acting skills are stellar and he had even sung in the 2016 animated musical, Sing. He shared the screen with Elton John in Kingsman: The Golden Circle in which Elton had a cameo appearance. It was while filming this that Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn heard about Rocketman and also became attached as an executive producer. Michael Gracey, who directed another blockbuster musical you may have heard of, The Greatest Showman, is also an executive producer for this film. Julian Day, the costume designer for Bohemian Rhapsody, has also designed the magnificent Elton John costumes for this movie.

The film has a great cast, including Taron. Richard Madden, best known for his role as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, will be playing Elton’s manager, John Reid. Bryce Dallas Howard will be playing Elton’s mother, Sheila Eileen. Jamie Bell will be playing Bernie Taupin, an English musician who is known for his collaborations with Elton.
A few months ago, Taron Egerton also sang on stage along with Elton John for the AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, which shows that he’s more than capable of doing justice to the legend’s biggest hits.
Rocketman will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and we will soon hear early reactions to the film. The makers seem confident about the film, however, as there will be early screenings held in the U.S. two weeks before its official release. Rocketman will release in India on 31st May, stay tuned for more updates and our review of our film.
