It is common to see movies based on children’s novels. Some have become successful franchises like the Harry Potter movies, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Lord of the Rings series, which even won an Oscar for the final movie – The Return of the King. Stand-alone movies have also been well-received like MatildaMary Poppins, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, among others. The latest novel to be turned into a feature film is John Bellairs’ gothic horror, The House with a Clock in Its Walls.

If you haven’t read this fantasy novel, here’s a gist of the story. 10-year-old Lewis is sent to live with his uncle, Jonathan Barnavelt, after the death of his parents. Barnavelt is no ordinary man but a warlock, living in a mysterious house next to Florence Zimmermann, who is a more powerful and good witch. The house was previously owned by yet another sinister couple, Isaac and Selena Izard, who was involved in dark magic. Before his death, Isaac Izard made a mysterious clock that he hid inside the walls of the house, which had the power to destroy the world. Meanwhile, having learned magic from his uncle and in a bid to impress his new friend, Lewis tries to revive the dead in the cemetery, bringing to life the ghost of Selena. Having regained the energy to complete her husband’s mission, Selena is back to bring about the end time. So it is up to Johnathan to defeat her, with the help of Florence and his young nephew.

The trailer for The House with a Clock in Its Walls suggests that the movie does not stray too far from the book. Jack Black plays Lewis’s uncle and warlock, Jonathan Barnavelt, while Lewis is played by newcomer Owen VaccaroCate Blanchett takes on the role of Florence Zimmerman and Hamilton actress Renée Elise Goldsberry plays Selena Izard. There are not too many well-known faces in the film barring its lead actors. Eli Roth (creator of the psychological thriller series Hostel) has helmed the project, while writer of the Supernatural series, Eric Kripke, has adapted the novel into a screenplay. Horror, as a genre, is not new to these guys and we can expect a marvelous and thoroughly entertaining film by them.
