Everything You Need To Know About Thor: Ragnarok

Director: Taika Watiti.

Phase 3 of Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be about taking bold steps. The final Avengers movies seem to be defining the word 'ambitious' with so many superheroes packed into a single movie. We cannot help but marvel at their patience as they take us step by step, introducing each character before putting them all together. Based on four separate comic books – RagnarokThe Hulk PlanetLike a Bat Out of Hell and Unworthy Thor, Thor: Ragnarok is a mile away from its predecessors and closer to the realm of Guardians of the Galaxy with cool pop/rock music and colors that scream the 70's and 80's sci-fi era.

The similarity to Guardians of the Galaxy makes sense since Thor is away from Asgard and floating on different planets in other realms (where we have seen the Guardians venture before). The early Thor movies were criticized because they took themselves too seriously and the audience couldn't seem to do the same. While we might connect with Iron Man losing his armor, Thor's multiple separations from his Mjölnir seem overdone. Taika Watiti is all set to change that. He has a long résumé in comedy and he is making sure that in spite of the serious premise, the movie doesn't take itself too seriously. We see Asgard getting destroyed yet at the same time, we see Thor and Hulk indulging in playful banter.

The infinity stones spread across all the Marvel movies have been slowly leading up to the finale and this movie is where the final stone will be revealed – the soul stone. Apparently, it has been right in front of our eyes the whole time. From all the trailers, what we have deduced is that Hela acquires the stone sometime after she destroys Mjölnir and soon after takes over Asgard. A TV spot recently released showed us a glimpse of Odin on Midgard (Earth) and that seems to be the key to future events. One of those being that this is going to be a space trip (as opposed to a road trip) movie with Thor and Hulk traveling in space together. There is also the fight between Thor and Hulk which we are waiting to watch. Marvel has never been known to hold back when it comes to divulging plot lines in trailers but if early reviews are to be believed, there is a lot more in store.

From what we have seen in the trailers, there are many new characters joining the old ones. Thor and Hulk who remained absent from Captain America: Civil War have joined forces here as are Valkyrie (who is Marvel's probably first LGBTQ character), LokiDoctor Strange and The GrandmasterCate Blanchett (who took this role to please her children) as Hela gives us goosebumps and she is probably the most frightening of all MCU villains (second to Thanos of course). All the characters introduced in this movie, will probably make a reappearance in Infinity War (boy, the movie is surely going to be crowded). Matt Damon will be making an appearance as well and you will have to watch the movie to know what that is about. Hela, however, is not the only villain. Sutur, a popular comic book villain, is rumored to be making an appearance as well.

The early reviews are in and Thor: Ragnarok is being termed the best Thor movie yet (the standard was pretty low though) with amazing visual effects and the perfect balance of humor and stakes.Taika Watiti as a director seems to be a great addition to the MCU and we would like to definitely see more work from him. There haven't been many talks about Thor 4 coming along but Watiti has expressed his wish to direct it since he really isn't fond of any other MCU character.
