Every year, Hollywood puts out quite a few book adaptations and 2020 is going to be no different. There are many novels that are getting a big screen adaptation and you have the chance to read the original works and catch up on the stories before you see them in theatres. Here are the upcoming book adaptations that will soon be releasing:

Little Women

Actor-turned-director Greta Gerwig amazed everyone with her last film Lady Bird, which also received multiple Oscar nominations. Her next was an adaptation of the classic Louisa May Alcott novel and it has a stellar cast that includes Meryl StreepSaoirse RonanTimothée ChalametLaura Dern, and Emma Watson. The Call of the Wild

Based on Jack London’s novel of the same name, this book adaptation will star Harrison Ford, Dan Stevens, and Karen Gillan, among others. The story follows a sled dog, who struggles for survival in the snowy Alaskan wilderness. The film will be releasing in February.

The Secret Garden

National Treasure director Marc Munden is directing the adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s famous novel The Secret Garden. The film stars Dixie Egerickx in the lead role as Mary Lennox with Colin Firth playing her uncle, Lord Archibald. The film is scheduled to be released in April.

Emma

Jane Austen‘s novel about youthful hubris receives another adaptation. In this 2020 film, Anya-Taylor Joy will be playing the titular character. This will be the first feature film from Autumn de Wilde who is known for his work on music videos. It’s currently scheduled to be released in February.

The Woman in the Window

After directing the Oscar-nominated biopic Darkest Hour, Joe Wright‘s next is going to be a mystery thriller that’s adapted from a 2018 novel. Starring Amy AdamsAnthony MackieGary Oldman, and Julianne Moore, this is the story of a woman who spies on her neighbors and becomes a witness to a violent crime. The film is scheduled to release in May.

The Personal History of David Copperfield

Based on the classic Charles Dickens‘ novel, this film is being directed by Armando Iannucci, whose last film was the highly-acclaimed comedy The Death of Stalin and stars Dev Patel as David Copperfield. It’s already premiered at film festivals and has got many positive reviews.

Artemis Fowl

Based on Eoin Colfer‘s best-selling book series of the same name that follows the adventures of a 12-year old genius that comes from a long line of criminal descendants, Artemis Fowl was originally going to release in August 2019 but was postponed and it will now be released in May.

The One and Only Ivan

Based on the book by K.A. Applegate about a gorilla named Ivan who lives in a cage at the mall, this film will feature Sam Rockwell as the voice of the gorilla. The One and Only Ivan will also star Angelina Jolie, Bryan Cranston, Danny DeVito, and Helen Mirren. The film is produced by Disney and will be releasing in August.

Without Remorse

Tom Clancy‘s books have been bestsellers and have been adapted not just into movies but also into television shows and video games. Without Remorse is the latest film adaptation and features Michael B. Jordan in the lead. The film is scheduled to release in September.

Death on the Nile

Sequel to Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile has Kenneth Branagh reprising his role of Hercule Poirot, ready to solve a whole new case and features an ensemble cast that includes Gal Gadot, Letitia Wright, Armie Hammer, Ali Fazal, Emma Mackey, Russell Brand, and more. The film will be releasing in October.

The Witches

Roald Dahl‘s dark fantasy book The Witches is getting another film adaptation in 2020. This one is directed by Stefano Sollima and will be starring Anne Hathway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Rock. The Witches is going to be an October release.

Dune

Dune is going to be one of the biggest films of the year and the fact that it’s an adaptation of one of the most highly-regarded sci-fi books is just one of the reasons. It’s being directed by Denis Villeneuve who has proven himself to be one of the best directors in Hollywood right now. The cast list is also immense and includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem, among others. The film is currently in post-production and will be releasing in December.
