Background & Story:
Lion is based on the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. This powerful story of loss and hope follows the journey of a little Indian boy, Saroo, who roams the streets with his brother and gets split up at the railway station. Not knowing his way back, he decides to get some sleep on a stationary train, only to find out he is thousands of miles away in Calcutta, where he cannot speak the language and cannot remember the name of his village. Twenty five years later, he sets out to find his lost family using Google maps.

In the film, Dev Patel plays Saroo, Sunny Pawar plays the character's younger self and Nicole Kidman and David Wenham play Saroo's adoptive parents.

It is said that Dev Patel had to spend eight months preparing for his role. He developed a certain physique, grew his beard and worked on an Australian accent. Patel also visited Saroo Brierley's orphanage in India and wrote a diary while he took the original train ride that Brierley accidentally took as a young child.

Sunny Pawar, who plays the younger Saroo, didn't speak English when the film went on floors. He bonded with his on-screen mother over cricket, a few scenes of which actually made it into the movie.

As for Nicole Kidman, she was picked by the real-life Sue Brierley. Both Nicole and Sue discovered that they were both deeply maternal and loved their adopted and biological children equally.

Lion, which has already earened six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, was shot primarily in Kolkata, post which the schedule was moved to Australia.
