Director: Reema Kagti
Release Date: August 15, 2018.
Akshay Kumar began this year with the super hit film, Padman. The movie was based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist who worked on manufacturing low-cost sanitary pads in rural parts of India. The actor’s next film is about a true event too. Gold, which hits theatres on August 15, chronicles the journey of the first Indian Hockey team to win an Olympic Gold medal for the country. Kumar will be seen as Tapan Das, the coach who played an instrumental role in helping the players achieve glory.
Gold is helmed by Reema Kagti who previously worked on Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Talaash. While Kagti has directed only two movies, she has written all of Zoya Akhtar’s films. Her upcoming sports drama was announced last year and the shoot commenced in England. Since Kumar is known to wrap up projects fast, the filming of Gold was completed within a few months. This film marks the big screen debut of TV actress Mouni Roy and she plays the role of Das’ wife. Besides her, Kunal Kapoor features as one of the principal characters in the movie.
The Independence Day weekend is a spot that most actors want to block for their movies. The makers of Gold would have loved a solo release but the film will clash with John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate at the box-office. Akki and Abraham are good friends and the former is reportedly upset about the two films releasing on the same day as he blocked the date much in advance. Who will emerge the winner in this battle?
