Verdict:  Groundhog Day – The teenage edition.

There have been many movies and TV series with the same premise as this one. The protagonists find themselves waking up to the same day, with certain events taking place over and over again – an infinite time loop. Before I Fall may not be completely out of the box but it has its moments.

On Cupid Day, February 12th, Samantha “Sam” Kingston (Zoey Deutch) wakes up and intends to make the most of it with her friends. Sam’s squad has four popular girls, including her. They are self-proclaimed “bitches” and are not afraid of the bitchy tag associated with them. Lindsay (Halston Sage) is the bitchiest of them all. Sam, too, is mean to her mother and sister, rude to her friend who secretly likes her and makes life miserable for Juliet (Elena Kampouris), who is supposedly a social outcast. It’s Cupid Day and Sam and her friends are invited to a party. Sam is very excited about losing her virginity to her boyfriend Rob and her friends are excited for her. However, things don’t go as planned and the posse decides to dump the party and go home. However, they all perish in a ghastly accident while driving back home. But wait, there’s more.

Before I Fall - BookMyShow

Sam wakes up with an alarm on her phone. It’s 12th February again. Sam gradually realizes that she is caught in an infinite time loop, where she has to make everything right before the day can end.

The premise is interesting and the message is clear – our actions and decisions decide our own fate. Sam’s character is shown to be uptight and mean but as the film progresses, we see another side to her personality. She can sympathetic and affectionate but when her friends are around, she chooses not to. Zoey Deutch looks the part and she portrays the conflict very well. She looks confused and tries to fix things as she deems fit, over and over again. And one day, she gets it right.

The characters, though straight out of a typical teen drama, are quite well etched and it takes no time for the audience to connect with them. However, there is no explanation as to why the loop was created in the first place or why Sam was chosen for it.
