Verdict: Ghostbusters fully rebooted for this generation.

Ghostbusters is a female-led reboot of the 1984 action-comedy, which was directed by Ivan Reitman. This Paul Feig version may follow the template of the original, but is also all ghosts, gags and girl power. The film revolves around four hilarious women who suit up to save their city.

After her association with paranormal research has been discovered, Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) is denied a tenured position at Columbia University. She then decides to join her high school friend Abby Yates’ (Melissa McCarthy) project, which involves proving ghosts are real, scientifically. Jullian Holtzman (Kate McKinnon), is a nuclear engineer who knows what she is doing, even if no one else does, and helps assemble kits for these girls to execute the project. The trio is later joined by a transport employee, Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones), and a hot receptionist Kevin (Chris Hemsworth), who is the male counterpart of the strereotypical hot, dumb blonde bimbo.

CGI embellished ghosts begin to flow into New York city when an individual who has apocalyptic inclinations wants to ‘bend the universe’ and rejoices every time there is an occurrence that isn’t ‘biblically good’. The villain, Rowan (Neil Casey), is a bullied character who wants to exact revenge against humanity.

While the writing may be uninspired, the humor and special-effects do not require anything to fall back on. In addition, having a comedically gifted cast proves to be a brilliant idea. While one may love the fact that such women (who save the day without any need for a man) are rare to see in a major action-comedy blockbuster, there is a shortage of chemistry in the anchoring and central relationship between Abby and Erin, which is supposed to date back to high school.

Despite some of its shortcomings, this one is probably Feig’s most visually engaging film. The big and splashy fight sequences keep you at the edge of your seats, almost making you wish that you were in them (probably performing those video game moves yourself, even). One of the many things that may interest you is that (spolier ahead) there is a teasing hint of a sequel in the post-end credits!
