Gone Girl is a terrifying portrait of marriage. David Fincher, the master of cinematic dark arts, tells us a toxic and unsparing tale about men, women and what we do to each other. Adapted by Gillian Flynn from her best-selling novel, Gone Girl begins at the end of Nick and Amy's relationship. Nick, played by Ben Affleck, has an amiable, easy-going demeanor but he's capable of causing real hurt. Amy, played by Rosamund Pike, is beautiful and accomplished but also demanding and vicious. Recession and unemployment has frayed their marriage – they have become that snapping, biting couple they promised each other they would never be. Then, quite suddenly, on the morning of their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy disappears. And Nick becomes the focus of media scrutiny – did the grieving husband in fact kill his wife?
