There exists a world of brilliant movies and equally brilliant movie trailers. But unfortunately, both of them don’t often go hand-in-hand. At one point or another in your life, there would have been a moment when you have been tricked by a surprisingly impressive trailer into watching the  surprisingly bad full length counterpart. I’ve have fallen for some really brilliant movie trailers. So you are not alone in your sorrow.

If you have access to the latest editing software, then for sure any bad movie can be saved with a fantastic movie trailer which offers the audience a must-watch preview. Guess that’s the reason, the process of editing is always undertaken in a locked room (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Pulling the wool over our eyes, here’s a look at 5 amazingly awesome movie trailers that ended up  being a huge disappointment.

 1. THE VILLAGE (2004) – M. Night Shyamalan

When I came across the trailer of this movie, I was sitting alone in the dark. I mustered enough courage to watch it. Gosh! It was a crazy idea. I felt chills run down my spine and goosebumps run up my arms. Something I’d never experienced before. The trailer was scary yet so intriguing that I was hooked. I had to watch the film! That ended up being a dumb idea. The glimpse of the unknown ‘beasts/monsters’ in the trailer had raised my curiosity. But unfortunately, the signature Shyamalan twist in the movie never satisfied it. 10 minutes into the movie, I left the theater with a feeling of utter disappointment.

2. THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003) – Andy & Lana Wachowski (The Wachowski Brothers)

Who doesn’t love the movie The Matrix? And when the sequel, The Matrix Reloaded was announced every single fan – boy or girl got their hands on any sort of  media to get any shred of news. And then the trailer hit the media platforms. Boy! It hit real hard. The setup, the special effects and everything else about the trailer gave us hope that the movie going for something great. But how wrong we were. Though the movie collected quite an amount at the box office, the audience, across the globe, were left confused and bored. The trailer showed a lot of potential but the movie delivered none.

3. GODZILLA (1998) – Roland Emmerich

A 10 year-old may find Godzilla as the best movie of all time. Even an adult might feel the same after watching the teaser. The trailer was action-packed and a little mysterious. It appeared to be a thrilling ride with some awesome special effects. Of all the movie trailers that I have seen, this was the first ever movie disappointment. If Emmerich had outsourced the movie editing job to the same person who cut the trailer, 1998 Godzilla might’ve delivered all the fun that it promised.

4. HANCOCK (2008) – Peter Berg

Will Smith as Hancock made quite a bang with his  entry amidst other superhero flicks. The trailer was entertaining, fun-to-watch and intense. The movie took off on the same path as well but noone could figure out what went wrong. The energy fizzled out halfway and Hancock, went from being a uniquely fantastic superhero movie into a hodgepodge of confusing, bizarre scenes. Simply heartbreaking. (Don’t mind me, I am just wiping a tear from my eye.)

5. SPIDERMAN 3 (2007) – Sam Raimi

Superheroes like Superman, Iron-Man, Batman etc., infact every other super-powered man don’t require any special introduction. Such is the case with Spiderman. Owing to the popularity of it’s predecessors, the third installment of the franchise didn’t really need a teaser. Anyway, a very exciting and momentous trailer was launched adding to the anticipation for the next Spiderman movie. And BANG! The movie did kick-off with fireworks but just 30 minutes into the movie, it turned into a mishmash of several sub plots. Guess the bang was just a misfire!

So next time, when you watch a great movie trailer, don’t let it deceive you. Trust me, all brilliant movie trailers are not signs of equally great movies. A masterpiece of cinema can never be gauged by the trailer designed for mass appeal. After watching several great movies, you know this is true. Trailers are a part of this cinematic world. Everyone has had similar experiences, these were just a few of mine. Share yours with us and have a laugh about every terrible movie you ended up watching.
