Yes, the year 2019 is not over yet. But we have to talk about the mind-blowing South Indian movies that we were blessed with so far. While 2018 gave us Ratsasan, Vada Chennai, 96, Rangasthalam, C/o Kancharapalem, Katheyondu Shuruvagide and Varathan, to name a few from each of the four major film industries down south, this year was not far behind. Here are some of the best movies that had us completely hooked.

Bizarre in a good way – that’s what this movie is all about. This Thiagarajan film opened to great reviews. With brilliant performances from all the cast members – Vijay Sethupathi, Samantha Akkineni, Fahadh Faasil, Bagavathi Perumal and Ramya Krishnan, Super Deluxe is a must-watch. The film makes you understand each character deeply and talks about topics like porn, sex, sexuality, and God in a manner that has not been done before in South Indian cinema. For a superstar and mainstream actor like Vijay Sethupathi to take on and execute a role of a transgender named Shilpa is something that no Indian film watcher would have ever dreamt of. Shilpa is probably one of the best roles to be played by Vijay and he carries it brilliantly.

The story of a cricketer named Arjun who had to give up on his cricketing career, Jersey stars Nani in the lead role. After almost a decade, Arjun plans to make a comeback but he struggles hard to do so. Jersey can be considered to be Nani’s finest performance till date. A true masterpiece, this Gowtam Tinnanuri movie cannot be missed.

This political satire stars R.J. Balaji as Lalgudi Karupaiah Gandhi aka LKG, a local area counselor who aims of being a national leader. With brilliant humor and witty logic, this movie will keep you hooked throughout.

An inspirational Telugu biopic starring Priyadarshi, Mallesham is about Padma Shri recipient Chintakindi Mallesham, the man who revolutionized the art of weaving. Directed by Raj R, this biopic was highly-anticipated by the Telugu audience and it didn’t disappoint.

One of the best Mammootty movies to release this year, Peranbu is a gem of a movie. If Mammootty’s 2018 movies disappointed his fans, Peranbu made everyone happy. A heart-touching movie about a father and his daughter Paapa (Sadhana) who has cerebral palsy, Peranbu is a beautifully crafted tale.

This Madhu C Narayanan directed film is a compelling tale of four brothers told beautifully. Written by Syam Pushkaran, Kumbalangi Nights is one of the best Malayalam movies of 2019. Starring Soubin Shahir, Shane Nigam, Sreenath Bhasi and Fahadh Faasil in prominent roles, this movie is a treat to watch. A breakthrough in Malayalam cinema, this movie speaks about family, the healing power of human touch, compassion, patriarchy and so much more.

A murder mystery set in the 1970s, Kavaludaari is one of the best from the Kannada film industry this year. This film was full of thrills and suspense. Set in the Emergency period, it keeps you hooked on till the very end. Every role – big or small – was executed brilliantly by the actors.

The year 2019 is not over yet, which means we may be lucky enough to witness some more amazing South Indian movies. Stay tuned for more.
