Bollywood has shaped the way we express our emotions in reality. Despite an extra pinch of drama, Bollywood has more or less been a part of our lives. The portrayal of mothers has always been prominent in Bollywood films, owing to our distinct family-oriented themes.  These mothers of Bollywood added the much-needed element of a ‘maa’ in cinema.

1.  Durga Khote

Durga Khote has played the role of a more idealistic wife in films. She leaves the son for her husband.  Some of her most memorable performances in the role of a mother are: Mughal-E-Aazam, Bobby, Vidaai, Anand, Bawarchi, Abhimaan.


2. Nirupa Roy

She can be proudly called as Bollywood’s most popular mother, successfully mothering heroes in movies like Maa, Mard, Deewaar, Do Bigha Zamin, Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhaag, Gumraah, Mukddar ka Sikandar.


3. Lalita Pawar

On one side, her characters were those of an idealistic mother, who tolerated misery. On the other hand, she played the role of an elder woman who had ulterior material motive. Some of the films she’s famous for is: Mr& Mrs 55, Anari, Sujata, Khandaan, Anand, Sangam, Aurat.


4. Reema Lagoo

Reema Lagoo who left us last year was one of the most favorite female character actors of Bollywood. The innocence and affection that she carried would make anyone wish for a mother like her.

Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, VastavAashiqui, Judwaa, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Saath Saath Hain are some of her popular appearances.


5. Kirron Kher

With Kirron Kher, Bollywood came out of the age-old mould of ailing and teary-eyed mothers, creating a newfound modern motherly character who was witty and struck the right chord with the Millennials. She has worked in movies like Devdas, Khamosh Pani, Khoobsurat, Om Shanti Om, Veer ZaraDostanaTotal Siyapaa, Punjab 1984, Kabhi Alvida Naa KehnaFanaaRang De BasantiSingh Is Kinng.


6. Jaya Bachchan

After giving super hits as a leading actress in her films, Jaya took a break from Bollywood when motherhood happened in real life. However, the real-life mother came back tothe  screen with  Kabhi Khushi Kabhie GhamKal Ho Naa Ho and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and we loved her nonetheless. 


7. Ratna Pathak Shah

With Indian society, Indian cinema has also changed. In Indian cinema, where the mother was idealistic. Now the image of the mother has changed. Ratna Pathak Shah as the new Mother plays a significant role in these films.Films: Mubarakan, Lipstick Under My BurkhaKapoor and Sons, Khoobsurat, The Coffin Maker, Gol Maal, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.


8. Dimple Kapadia

Dimple Kapadia has carved a separate distinct space for herself in Hindi films. The roles of an enraged mother or sometimes a rather chill mother makes her a treat to watch in a role we’ve seen other actresses portray: Dabangg, Cocktail, Luck By chance, What The Fish.


9. Farida Jalal

Farida Jalal’s contribution to Hindi films is unparalleled. Restricted by an industry that mostly offered her mother roles, Farida Jalal made each role her own and gave us something to remember her by: Dilwale Dulhaniya Le jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Mammo, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Student Of The Year, Laadla, Kya Kehna, Zubeidaa and many more.


1o. Rakhee

Our generation probably only remembers Rakhee for her famous act in Karan Arjun, made memorable by the words “Mere Karan Arjun Aayenge”. However, it was Rakhee who first successfully transitioned from being a leading actress to playing the roles of a mother in Hindi films. She’s famous for her roles in films like: Karan Arjun, Dil Ka Rishta, Rudaali, Baazigar, Baadshah.


11. Zohra Sehgal

There was a time when Hindi films had marginal roles for older actors. Zohra Sehgal never quite vanished despite the restricted roles she was being offered. A powerhouse of talent, Zohra shone in the world of theater when films weren’t aplenty. When films came flocking to her, she gave us some really memorable performances: Saawariya, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Cheeni Kum, Veer Zara, Dil Se, and others.
