We have often seen one creator being inspired by another. Aren’t all art forms inspired by another? Every art form has a muse. Whether it is another art form or another human being, art forms are inspired and put together by the creator.

In Bollywood too, creators have been inspired by other creations. These are the books that came to life on the big screen.

#1 Devdas- Devdas

The same story was told thrice on the big screen by Bollywood. All the three were a re-telling of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1917 novel ‘Devdas’.

#2 Parineeta- Parineeta

Another 1917 novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay was adapted on the big screen starring Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sanjay Dutt. Vidya Balan made her debut with this movie.

#3 Othello- Omkara

Vishal Bharadwaj’s love for Shakespeare is quite loud. The man loves tragedy and Shakespeare. Omkara was inspired by Othello, having said that, he brought his own flavor to the tragedy.

#4 Macbeth- Maqbool

If anyone can handle Shakespeare in Bollywood, it is only Vishal Bharadwaj. Maqbool is one of the best screen adaptations of Macbeth. Pankaj Kapur won the National Award for this movie.

#5 Hamlet- Haider

Vishal Bharadwaj weaved together Kashmir’s tragedy with Hamlet and it was a masterpiece. Shahid won the Best Actor at many award functions for this one.

#6 The Guide- Guide

Jab matlab se pyar hota hai … toh pyar se matlab nahi rehta.’

The iconic movie starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman was inspired by R.K Narayan’s ‘Guide’. Guide went on to win many National Awards.

#7 Emma- Aisha

Aisha was based on the Hollywood flick ‘Clueless’ and ‘Emma’. All three were inspired by Jane Austen’s novel ‘Emma’.

#8 Man, Woman And Child- Masoom

Naseeruddin Shah- Shabana Azmi starrer- Masoom was inspired by Eric Segal’s ‘Man, Woman And Child’.

#9 ‘The Great Expectations’- Fitoor

Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Fitoor’ was based on Charles Dickens ‘The Great Expectations’. If you’ve read the book then you’d know that Rekha would have been the perfect Madam but she walked out of the project.

#10 The Last Leaf- Lootera

Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’ starring Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh was an adaptation of O Henry’s short story ‘The Last Leaf’.

#11 Chetan Bhagat Novels

#12 Ruskin Bond’s short story- 7 Khoon Maaf

Ruskin Bond even made an appearance in the movie. The movie was based on his short story about a woman killing her 7 husbands.
