1950s was the decade which is known as the Golden era of Hindi Cinema. It was the time when some of the best directors, writers and actors came together to create seminal films that are considered classics even half a century later. The era saw the emergence of parallel cinema and gave the industry some legendary actors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Nargis, Meena Kumari and Waheeda Rehman.
Time has changed in Bollywood (from Black & White to Color), but the classics remain the same. Here's a list of five classic movies from 1951 that you can enjoy and get impressed even today!
Starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis, Awaara was the film that gave us the first ever dream sequence of Hindi cinema. It took three months to shoot this sequence where Nargis was seen wafting through the clouds in search of her love. Awaara established Raj Kapoor as the Chaplin-like ‘tramp’ of Hindi cinema. The songs especially “Awaara hoon”, “Ghar aaya mera pardesi” and “Dum bhar jo udhar muhn phere” are remembered even today. The movie swept people off their feet not just in India but in Russia and China.
Baazi was the directorial debut of Guru Dutt which starred Dev Anand, Geeta Bali and Kalpana Kartik. It was an immediate success. It was a crime thriller and became a trend setter for several crime thrillers that followed. The film is a tribute to the Forties' Film Noir Hollywood with the morally ambiguous hero, the transgressing siren, and shadow lighting.
The musical comedy of 1951, Albela starred Bhagwan Dada and Geeta Bali. The film is remembered even today for its songs like Bholi Surat Dil Ke Khote, Shola Jo Bhadke and Yeh Diwana, Yeh Parwana. The music of the film was given by C. Ramachandra. Albela was one of the top grossers of 1951.
Jadoo was the psychosocial melodrama film directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar and starred Nalini Jaywant, Suresh and Shyam Kumar. The film was very well received at the box office and declared as a hit. Music of Jadoo was composed by Naushad and garnered a lot of praise.
