5 Mandatory Elements of an Anurag Kashyap Movie

Anurag Kashyap is a filmmaker who's in a league of his own. With a certain type of audience, his movies explore a different set of genres too, which he undoubtedly excels in. On the contrary, Kashyap was not one of those people born to make films. He was pursuing Zoology till the day he watched Bicycle Thieves (1948) at a film festival in 1993. That was when he left everything behind and arrived to Bombay to pursue filmmaking. And now, he is one of the best filmmakers our industry has.

Majorly revolving around thrill, crime, and politics, his films make for a delightful watch, for the right kind of audience of course. And not only this, we have seen a pattern being followed in most Anurag Kashyap films. Have a look at the top 5 elements that are common in every Kashyap movie:

Unconventional Scripts

His scripts are always out of the box. While the majority of the industry focusses on making masala entertainment and romantic comedies, his genres mainly revolve around crime thriller, political-drama (which need not involve actual political parties), and noir. He has this eye for stories and his storytelling is indeed commendable. Consider Gangs of Wasseypur 1 & 2 or Dev D for that matter.

Abusive Language

In one of his interviews, Kashyap said, "I am a straight talker. I am not politically correct or diplomatic." This shows in his movies as well. The dialogues generally are laced with explicit, impactful language delivered by an amazing cast.

Exceptionally Violent Characters

Every Kashyap movie has some sort of violence in it. It can be as extreme as in Gangs of Wasseypur or as chaotic as it is in No Smoking. That violent part is generally ideated and executed by mainly one or two characters that have the exceptional quality to pull the scene off effortlessly. And every movie has one such character.

Realistic Execution

Realism, as he draws in the movie, comes straight from his sole inspiration of moving to the film industry – Bicycle Thieves. The neo-noir theme can be seen in each of his movies. He keeps everything realistic – from his sets to characters and inspirations. All that is far away from the implausibility that drives the major part of the content in the industry.

Excellent actors

Kashyap is not that fond of glamour. His movies have always had an unconventional, not necessarily glamorous, cast and crew that significantly add to the realistic cinema that he intends to make. These actors have not only given commendable performances but his movies have given us gems like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadda, and many more actors.

If you are the kind of person who feeds on thrill and gore, Kashyap is definitely your favorite Indian filmmaker. His upcoming movie Mukkabaaz traces the life of a boxer and is releasing this week and we cannot wait.
