Anurag Basu’s upcoming film, Barfi! starring Ranbir Kapoor , Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz promises to be a film about a differently-abled yet happy-go-lucky man. As seen in the first-look trailer, Ranbir Kapoor who plays a deaf and mute man is sprightly and smiles through all situations he is in, however mucky they are. The trailer, although sans dialogues demands undivided attention to the scene infront of you and the instrumental music only helps the cause. The female lead, Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic girl and a close friend of Murphy’s, known to his townsmen as Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor). Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t a silent film, but a regular film albeit more sensitised.

In the recently released Oscar-winning film, The Artist, one saw how just the stellar performances can plummet a well-written film to just about another level. Anurag Basu is known for making films based mostly on emotions, from positive to grey to a completely dark side of the character. Owing the experience gained from the previous films made by Basu, one can easily deduce how he has shown life from a gangster’s perspective to many lives coinciding in a metropolitan city. There’s love, there are emotions and many emphatic moments in each of his films.
Likewise, I expect nothing short of this Charlie Chaplin-esque film presented by UTV Motion Pictures and Ishana Movies Pvt. Ltd., directed by Anurag Basu. When you have a a super charming Ranbir Kapoor in a film and a multi-talented Priyanka Chopra playing their part with much aplomb, it isn’t too difficult to foresee a great film. Alien as the concept may sound to the new world, there have been ample performance-driven films. From where I see it, it may just be a new-age Koshish that released way-back in 1972 and brought out one of the best performances by both Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) or Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Khamoshi – The Musical

However, comparison only steals the thunder from what different actors and filmmakers can give to their respective audiences, hence the thought stands. September 14 is the date to mark on your calendars and we will be back with regular updates.
