Biopics: Audiences’ choice

“I am interested in people, in human beings, in human character, in their interplay in the relationship of characters. That fascinates me in itself.”- Satyajit Ray

Every day commuting, confrontation with family problems, tussle with bosses, financial crisis adds up to the struggles of our life but beating these odds, those few who come out of it strong and potent are hailed as heroes. We’ve had a few of these heroes and their story certainly interests us. The humane touch to their personality only glistens it enough to shine on celluloid. To relieve our stress when we turn towards a multiplex or a single screen, we have just one thought on our mind – Entertainment. But it is not just entertainment that we seek to soak in us, but also the inspiration, the motivation to get going on the sodden path of our life. Bollywood perhaps should be revered for giving us all that.

Bollywood, which is often inspired from real-life incidents off late has been picking up the entire life story of a person and depicting it into a delightful motion picture. As observed by the film analysts, biographical films or biopics as they are commonly known, have become a trend in Bollywood. With The Dirty Picture, Paan Singh Tomar and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag getting much credence, it is understood that Priyanka Chopra‘s next on iron-lady Mary Kom will also be lauded. A cynic would criticize the filmmakers for lacking novelty, however, these films receive massive positive response from the audience which cannot be overlooked.

With Madhuri Dixit’s Gulab Gang, Pocket Dynamo produced by Mumbai Film Company (Riteish Deshmukh’s production house) – a film on legendary wrestler Kashba Jadhav, Anurag Basu’s biopic on Kishore Kumar starring Ranbir Kapoor, Vidya Balan who will don the skin of carnatic vocalist MS Subbulakshmi, Bhavna Talwar’s 120-crore project film on Rajeev Gandhi, it does look like it’ll soon be raining biopics in B-town. But what prompts the filmmakers to bring the lives of these mighty hearts on celluloid, is an oft repeated question. To get a clear picture, we asked the same to our readers and here’s what they summed up.

A bird’s eye view to gauge why Biopics have catapulted:

Storms make oaks take roots: The audience believes that the struggles of the character makes an interesting story, a story filled with dukh, dard and kamyaabi. The determination, courage and grit that takes a common man to the pinnacle of heroism, which is deemed to be a pivotal element in a Hindi film, has its essence spread in the stories of the celebrated real-life heroes which in turn inspires and motivates the audience.

We would like to live as we once lived: The keeda of inquisitiveness is not only responsible for killing the cat but also for the birth of a masterpiece on screen. The audience is eager to relive the history, the urge to know more about the celebrated personalities, their lives and secrets, makes another reason for the biopic as a genre fast catching up.

A martyr cannot be dishonored: Says one of our readers, reiterating an old adage. He says, “If a martyr cannot be dishonoured, it only means we have to honour them!” The stories on renowned personalities instantly become crowd-pullers, making the work look one-of-a-kind and is an understood shortcut to show you in a good light as a filmmaker with a repute.

Form follows profit: Audience usually awaits such a film which saves them the effort of having to read through a biography or an autobiography. Success is a sure thing when it is not just a film but a biopic. Keeping profits in mind, filmmakers do not think the genre will ever fail them, lest they fail the genre.

It would be fair to conclude that the viewers choose the genre and not the filmmaker(s). It is the audience which bets on the success of the film and not the filmmakers. So if Biopics’ are the flavor of the season, it is indeed the audience choice. Ab junta janardhan ke saamne kisiki kya chalegi.
