Watch Deepika Padukone Tell A True Story of Trauma And Triumph In Chhapaak

Back in 2018, the much-awaited and controversial biographical drama Padmaavat made a grand release at the box-office. It could be considered lead actress Deepika Padukone’s biggest role to date and it was received with praise from critics and audiences. Post that, the actress was part of one of the biggest news events in Bollywood last year with her marriage to actor Ranveer Singh. Making her post-marriage comeback to the big screen, she will now star in another biographical film titled Chhapaak. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the actress will take on the character of Malti who is based on a real-life acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal.

When director Gulzar came across the extremely rampant issue of acid attacks, she knew she had to rope in Deepika Padukone for the role in her on-screen take on the subject. Although there isn’t much to know about the film’s plot yet, the lead actress originally made the announcement of her role in the film stating that it is a “…story of trauma and triumph. And the unquashable human spirit.” The shooting for the film commenced back in June of this year with actor Vikrant Massey also featuring in the cast.

It is reported that once Deepika heard Laxmi’s true story, she was so moved that she decided to produce it as well. Backed by Fox Star Studios, Chhapaak will also mark Deepika’s foray into film production. The inspiration behind the film, Laxmi Aggarwal, was left with severe burns when a stalker attacked her with acid for rejecting his advances when she was 15-year-old. Now, the survivor is an activist and staunch campaigner for the rights of acid attack victims.

Coinciding with World Human Rights Day, Deepika announced on social media that the trailer of Chhapaak will release on December 10. The announcement featured a short teaser featuring a splash of water that acts as a reminder of the haunting incident that took place with Laxmi.

The trailer of the film gives us our first look at the journey of triumph that Chhapaak will take us through when it releases in cinemas on January 10, 2020. We get a look at how Deepika’s Malti overcomes the devastating incident of her acid attack and turns her life around for the better.
