One of the most treasured Bollywood filmmakers, Karan Johar has a prolific filmography. After he took over his father Yash Johar’s Dharma Productions, the list has continued to grow. So, it is only fitting that some of the most iconic movies in Indian cinema have been released under this banner. With the release of Bhoot, let’s take a look at all of the upcoming Dharma Productions movies set to release in 2020.
Bhoot: Part One – The Haunted Ship
The National Award-winning actor Vicky Kaushal has forayed into the horror genre with the first film of the Bhoot series. Based on a true incident, the film also stars Bhumi Pednekar and is directed by Bhanu Pratap Singh. It is Part One of Dharma Productions’ first horror franchise that takes inspiration from Ram Gopal Verma’s 2003 release Bhoot. It’s been said that Karan Johar requested RGV for the title Bhoot and he graciously agreed, with the belief that it was falling into the right hands. Read our review of the film here.
Following Singham, Singham Returns, and Simmba, Rohit Shetty’s cop universe is set to expand with Akshay Kumar donning the khaki uniform. As a pleasant surprise, this new addition to the franchise was teased with Akshay’s cameo as office Veer Sooryavanshi in Simmba. The film features an exciting cast including Ranveer Singh, Ajay Devgn, and Anupam Kher, along with marking Akshay’s on-screen reunion with Katrina Kaif. Jointly produced by Rohit Shetty Picturez, Cape Of Good Films, and Dharma Productions, it will release on March 27, 2020.
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl
After 2019’s Kesari, Dharma Productions is set to release another biopic. Starring Bollywood newbie Janhvi Kapoor in her first biographical role, this film tells the story of the first female Indian Air Force pilot. Gunjan Saxena made history along with fellow pilot Srividya Rajan when she ventured into a war zone to evacuate injured soldiers from Kargil in 1999. This inspiring retelling is directed by newcomer Sharan Sharma and features Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in the cast. The film is scheduled to release on April 24, 2020.
Following up 2008’s Dostana starring John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan, and Priyanka Chopra, this Dharma Productions sequel will feature a brand new cast. Karan Johar took to Twitter to confirm Kartik Aaryan and Janhvi Kapoor as the lead duo while teasing a fresh face who was later revealed to be debutant Lakshya. Johar also promised that the film will focus on accurate, non-caricaturish representations of gay characters. Directed by Collin D’Cunha, the comedy film’s release date hasn’t been confirmed.
Dharma Productions’ second biopic of 2020, this Sidharth Malhotra starrer tells the story of real-life Indian Army officer Captain Vikram Batra. Captain Batra was posthumously awarded India’s highest and most prestigious award for valor, the Param Vir Chakra, for his actions during the 1999 Kargil War. The film is directed by Vishnuvardhan and written by Sandeep Srivastava. The release date is set for July 03, 2020.
After working with Shashank Khaitan on Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Varun Dhawan will be teaming up with the director once again for Rannbhoomi. Karan Johar tweeted to announce the film with a Diwali 2020 release. Although the film’s plot is yet to be announced, we do know that it will feature Bhumi Pednekar and Kiara Advani as the leading ladies.
Directed by Ayan Mukerji, this grand-scale film can easily be considered one of the most awaited movies of 2020. The title is derived from the Mahabharata where Brahmastra is described as a weapon with the ability to destroy the whole world. The film will tell a contemporary story that’s steeped in Indian mythology and features an impressive cast including the Alia Bhatt–Ranbir Kapoor duo, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and even a reported cameo from Shah Rukh Khan. It is set for a December 2020 release date.
