Movies in Bollywood are prone to backlash even before their release and one such film to face the wrath of the audience is Mohalla Assi. The trailer of the movie had released in June 2015 but the High Court ordered a stay on the film for hurting religious sentiments. There were allegations, PILs and marches against the film, which led to a very long hold on the release. But it now seems that the movie is out of troubled waters as CFBC has granted the film an ‘A’ certification abiding the ruling of the court.

It has been a long wait for the entire cast and crew, eight years to be precise. The movie stars Sunny Deol as an orthodox Brahmin and Sakshi Tanwar plays his wife. The story is inspired by Dr. Kashi Nath Singh‘s novel called Kashi Ka Assi. It revolves around the commercialization of Varanasi as a pilgrimage city, focussing on the politically charged events of the ’90s including the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.

The trailer has explicit content and abusive words. Viewer discretion is advised.

The trailer of the movie was re-released recently, covering Varanasi in its true self and laced with abusive language. According to the trailer, Dharmnath (Sunny Deol) is a man of principles and abides by his old-school beliefs. It is getting difficult for him to follow his ideology in this rapidly changing world and on the top of that, he has to deal with different kinds of pilgrims every day. The trailer also focuses on other factors affecting Banaras in every way possible.

As per the title, the film revolves around the historic neighborhood near the southern ghats of Varanasi (then Banaras). The movie went on floors in January 2011 with an aim to release in that very year. The shooting took place mainly at Mumbai Film City with some scenes shot at Varanasi. The filming was completed in March 2011, with the makers eyeing an early 2012 release. After the trailer release in 2015, there were also reports of it being leaked online. One thing led to another and the movie has been delayed till date.

Recently a tweet on Mohalla Assi‘s Twitter handle revealed the release date and since then, news has been pouring with updates on the film. The trailer of the movie re-released on the 25th of October, giving ample time for the viewers to check it out before the movie hits the screens. The movie is slated for a 16th November release and we sincerely hope that this time, the makers do not face any new troubles so we get to see the story of Mohalla Assi.
